This breaking news from MSNBC....

BRISBANE, Australia - Steve Irwin, the hugely popular Australian television personality and environmentalist known as the “Crocodile Hunter,” was killed Monday by a stingray during a diving expedition, police said. He was 44.

Irwin was filming an underwater documentary on the Great Barrier Reef in northeastern Queensland state when the accident occurred, Sydney’s The Daily Telegraph newspaper reported on its Web site.

The Australian Broadcasting Corp. said Irwin was diving near Low Isles Reef near the resort town of Port Douglas, about 1,260 miles north of the state capital of Brisbane.

Queensland ambulance service spokesman Bob Hamil confirmed that a diver had been killed by a stingray off Lowe Isles Reef but refused to say who the victim was until relatives had been notified.

A rescue helicopter was sent from the nearby city of Cairns, and paramedics from it confirmed the diver’s death.

“The probable cause of death is stingray strike to the chest,” Hamil said.

Staff at Australia Zoo, Irwin’s zoo in southern Queensland, said they had heard the reports but could not comment.

'Crikey!'
Irwin is famous for his enthusiasm for wildlife and his catchcry “Crikey!” in his television program “Crocodile Hunter,” which was first broadcast in Australia in 1992 and has aired around the world on the Discovery channel.

He rode his image into a feature film, and developed the Australia Zoo as a tourist attraction.

Irwin had received some negative publicity in recent years. In January 2004, he stunned onlookers at the Australia Zoo reptile park by carrying his 1-year-old son into a crocodile pen during a wildlife show. He tucked the infant under one arm while tossing the 13-foot reptile a piece of meat with the other.

Authorities declined to charge Irwin for violating safety regulations.

Later that year, he was accused of getting too close to penguins, a seal and humpback whales in Antarctica while making a documentary. Irwin denied any wrongdoing, and an Australian Environment Department investigation recommended no action be taken.

Irwin was also seen as a vocal critic of wildlife hunts in Australia. The federal government recently dropped plans to allow crocodile safaris for wealthy tourists in the Northern Territory following his vehement objections.

Irwin told the Australian television program “A Current Affair” that “killing one of our beautiful animals in the name of trophy hunting will have a very negative impact on tourism, which scares the living daylights out of me.”

He is survived by his American wife Terri, from Oregon, and their daughter Bindi Sue, 8, and son Bob, who will turn 3 in December.

That is from MSNBC, who is very thorough in their vetting. The AP is confirming the story. Steve Irwin is dead.

This really surprises me, despite his dangerous job.

In a way, I am shocked that he died this way, since he's supposed to be an animal expert. I hope they don't have his death on film...than again, if they did, they wouldn't have to guess the cause of death ;)

Another part of me isn't that shocked, considering that he's got a dangerous job and all.

So he's not killed by a ferocious animal he's getting too close to...but a stingray? Wow.

Oh my God that's so sad! I loved that guy, he was so passionate about animals. He had a couple of close calls with other animals like venemous snakes and the like.

This is truly sad though, and he leaves behind two young children. :(

yeah, this IS really sad. My mom told me this morning after I woke up and i was like, wait, THE steve irwin? The croc guy DIED?? I watched his shows a lot a couple years ago, he had a great personality and enthusiasm about his work and it kind of just rubbed off, ya know? it was hard not to be interested in what he was talking about.

from what ive heard, this is really a FREAK accident and he didn't get persay, TOO close [though obviously he was close enough for this to happen] but rather, stingrays are shy creatures and rarely sting and even MORE rarely is it fatal. its like a total of FOUR people have died from stingrays. this one got him in the heart and it was probably more the WOUND than the poison that did it. Stingrays are NOT among the 'ocean's deadliest' lol. My mom read that they actually WERENT filming oceans deadliest, but the weather was bad and so they went to another spot to film a special for his daughter instead :(

They DID get his death on film and i hope everyone involved has the sense to keep it PRIVATE and not go releasing it on the net or something rude like that. I just feel so bad for his wife and children.

I can say, though, AT LEAST he died doing something he LOVED. It was a good death, quick and painless, and he was having fun at the time. The best way to go, in my opinion.

And, his children, though they are too young to remember him when they are older, will have a lot of video footage to watch of him later and that is not something everyone gets.

I couldn't believe it when I heard that he died. Like everyone's said, it's amazing that he died by a stingray and not something more dangerous. Either way, it's horrible. :( He was extremely entertaining, and the fact that he genuienly loved his job and animals makes it even more of a loss.

I know this is sad but like I can't say I am surprised.. The man put his head into crocodiles.. why is everyone so shocked that he died?

Because even though he put his life on the line day in and day out with these animals, no one actually thinks he's going to get killed. I suppose everyone believes if you're on TV you're invinsible.

I know this is sad but like I can't say I am surprised.. The man put his head into crocodiles.. why is everyone so shocked that he died?

Because he DIDNT die by CROCODILE....

I mean yeah, i hear what you're saying... but like Sam said, nobody thinks he's gonna die... I mean after all, the world has been watching him fuck with crocs for TEN YEARS on tv... and he's been doing it since he was a child. After all this time, we just got used to him doing crazy ass things and surviving.

it just seems so "unbelievable" that of all the ways to die...from a STINGRAY attack of all things.

those are usually peacefull creatures too.

what's even worse is that his camp says they have the whole incident on TAPE. i hope that its not released on the internet...that's not something i'd want to see. :(
