A Weekend Affair # 7 - Exodus

The Great Hall

Alek wasn't super keen on Haleigh going off to meet some woman she didn't know, who had just turned up somehow at breakfast. He questioned whether it was a good idea for her to agree to it.

Black Widow: “If it’s not, you’re about to watch me kick that blonde chick’s ass.”

His expression turned a bit lascivious.

"Don't get me excited if you're not going to deliver."

He might not have thought it was a great idea, but he didn't want it to look like Haleigh couldn't take care of herself, which he knew she could, so he stayed in his seat. He signaled her guards to stay close to her, though - he wasn't stupid. She met the blonde woman at an alcove, and Alek leaned towards Zach to ask if he recognized her.

Zach: “She looks kind of familiar. Maybe I—”

Fucked her.

A hint of a smile came to his lips as Zach's eyes went to Brienne.

Good luck with that.

Zach: “No, I don’t think I know her. Must be one of Haleigh’s old friends. Haleigh is amused by her, at least. And that man she’s with is Ettore Testa. He’s old man Nefaria’s consigliere. Kind of like an advisor, the right hand man of the Count.”

Alek rolled his eyes. Hard.

"I know what a consigliere is, Zach. I've seen the Godfather."

They watched the interaction until the two blondes parted ways. He could feel something was off with Haleigh's body language when she sat down, so when she whispered in his ear, he went along with her.

Haleigh: “I think I ate too much. You done here?”

"Absolutely."

He didn't even blink at his half-finished plate of food. Alek rose, and nodded to their table companions.

"Bree. Zach. Safe travels."

His hand found the small of Haleigh's back as he lightly guided her out of the hall. He spoke to her in a low voice tinged with concern.

"Everything okay?"

Damien

Damien was in the middle of telling Cassie about England when the White Queen stood up, glass in hand, ready to make an announcement. Cassie had moved to his side of the table earlier and now he sat, arm around her, waiting to hear what the White Queen had to say.

Haleigh: “What a fucking weekend, am I right? Well, I hope you all enjoyed the antics and adventures, and if you didn’t, then fuck you, throw your own damn parties. To all my European collaborators, it’s been a pleasure. Now I know everyone is hungry, and tired as hell of the speeches, but I do have an announcement so suck it up. I’m not going to wax poetic. He knows how I feel about him and doesn’t need me to stroke his ego either. While you’re making your rounds and saying goodbye to our recent guests, make sure you stop by to congratulate Zach and wish him all the best. He’s the new Black King of Hellfire Europe. Yeah, we’re going to miss his ass. So, drink to his success, and let’s fucking eat already.”

Damien chuckled and leaned over to whisper in Cassie’s ear.

*enthuses*: ”Now there’s somebody we need to partner with.”

He pulled back to look at her and noticed then that the expression her face was less than enthused. He nudged her.

“Cassie? Are you okay?”

Cass: *quietly*: “I’m not okay!”

Damien could see tears forming in her eyes and he drew her close, shielding her from onlookers.

Cass: *angrily; quietly*: “This is just bullshit!! I was never a part of them, was I? After all I had done for them, after living here for so long...they never accepted me. They never embraced me as one of their own. I had accepted every single one...and then, when I needed them the most, they let me down.”

Damien held her as she vented. Cassie was absolutely devastated by what had happened to her. He didn’t dare try to calm her. She needed this, and he would give it to her. She still talked quietly, anger and hurt apparent in her voice.

Cass: “If they truly cared...if I was truly one of theirs...they would’ve helped me. They would’ve done something.” *tearfully*: “I thought of Amanda as my best friend and as a sister. She clearly didn’t feel the same otherwise she wouldn’t have abandoned me; she would’ve stayed by my side.” *disbelief*: “Why did I even let you talk me into coming? Why did I even let Bretta talk me into doing one last thing for her?”

Damien knew that the ‘one last thing’ for Bretta was a heartfelt apology note to Haleigh, for trying to ruin her Bishop’s reputation and life. Cassie had told Bretta the story and Bretta had felt that it was in the best interest of the ERC to try and smooth things over. Bretta had also mandated that they – Cassie – relinquish the deed to Cassie’s former club into the American Hellfire’s hands as a peace offering; to do as they wished with it. Both the deed and note were waiting in the White Queen’s office now, though Damien was a bit disappointed that he wouldn’t get to talk to her in person as he could see her leaving the great room. Damien also knew where these feelings were coming from. Having Zachary Armani as the new Black King would undoubtedly be a constant reminder to Cassie of what had happened; of what she had lost. He kissed her temple. When he spoke, his tone was filled with nothing but affection.

*quietly*: “Hey. Hey. Don’t do this. Don’t spiral. Remember what I said to you last night: you have to change the narrative. Okay? The future is yours. Now, let’s start by welcoming the new Black King into the family, yeah? You can show him that you’re okay; that you’re back and better than ever. Also, I can introduce you to Brienne. She’s fun.”

Cassie had told him about how muddled her mind had been and how insane she used to be. Oh, she had managed the necessities of her life but everything else... It had pained him to hear how bad her life had been here. Still, she was back where she belonged, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually now, and soon she would physically be where she belonged. He stood up and held out his hand for her to take. When she stood up, he whispered into her ear.

*softly*: ”Change the narrative. Your future is yours.

He led her over to the table where the European Black Queen and NEW King were sitting. He was about to say something when Cassie astonished him by turning on the charm. She placed a hand on Zach’s shoulder and pulled him into a hug, smiling widely, before speaking in Italian.

Cassie: *cheerfully*: “Congratulazioni per la promozione, Maestà! La mia Corte non vede l'ora di lavorare con te in futuro.” [Congratulations on the promotion, Your Majesty! My Court is looking forward to working with you in the future.]

Damien grinned. Cassie had also told him about her passion for languages and how that had fallen by the wayside when she lost herself. It was good seeing her take charge like this and speaking Italian. It probably felt even better from her perspective. Damien nodded at Brienne.

“Your Majesty, I’d like to introduce you to the other new member of our family. Meet Cassandra Johnson, the new Red Princess.”

He watched as Cassie held out her hand.

Cass: *politely*: “Pleased to meet you, Your Majesty. You’ve got a great King.”

Damien smiled as Cassie wrapped her arm around his waist. She looked at Zach again.

Cass: *politely*: “Your Majesty, I’d like to introduce you to Damien McAllister. He used to be the Red Rook, but now he’s the Red Prince.”

Gia’s eyes were glued to her Queen and her sister. If the bitch made a move against Haleigh, Gia would see it and she would spring into action. Her hackles had risen the instant she recognized Adriana, and they hadn’t lowered since. Why was she here? Why was she with Ettore?

It can’t be a coincidence that the day after I stood my ground at MY organization, Ettore decided to show up with her.

It was very suspicious indeed. Gia would not let her guard down for even a second. Almost as soon as Haleigh left Adriana – Gia had tried to count to five but it only lasted until the count of two – she was on her feet and moved swiftly through the tables towards Adriana. Flipping back her hair, Gia sat down with a smile.

“It’s so nice to see you, Adriana, and in such good company too! Ettore, I had no idea you two knew each other!”

Gia gave her sister the once over. Of course she was wearing white.

I’m going to find out your game plan.

“You’re looking as beautiful as always...Sis.”

Hellfire -- The Great Hall

Heidi and the new Red Rook were getting along swimmingly. It was not a surprise to Jack, who knew Heidi to be quite alluring. It was yet another thing he liked about her, that when they had to attend these events, she often made it easy and enjoyable even, because she could always keep others from focusing on how reticent and cold he was himself. All he had to do was occasionally interact, and count on her to keep things from getting dull.

Haleigh stood up for a brief send-off speech, if you could call it that. Jack couldn’t help but think of how amused Christopher would’ve been with his creation, his ‘daughter’, if he’d survived to see her now. She was so much like him, it was no wonder she’d clashed with her mother so often. She surprised the room by announcing Zach’s transfer, something even Heidi apparently hadn’t known about.

Calder: So what’s this Zach guy like? I’ve never met him. Is he a good choice?

The Red Rook asked, as the food was being served at their table. Jack gave a curt nod as he considered the move.

“To be Haleigh’s inside man in Europe? I’d say he’s the best choice.”

Heidi: Oh, certainly. Clearly he’s already got that Black Queen positively smitten with him. Not that I can blame her. The effect he has..... can be overwhelming.

The topic moved on, while they ate, to an intriguing meeting Haleigh was having with a woman in white. In and of itself, that would raise eyebrows. Pawns didn’t wear Court colors, they often dressed in blues, greens, purples, oranges, etc. Heidi took interest, of course, and asked if Jack knew who it was. Between the three of them at the table, they identified the man, and then Heidi encouraged Calder to use his power to find out more. He wasn’t sure if that was allowed, but Heidi reassured him.

Heidi: You could always explain that I requested your help to protect my Queen. You can get away with a lot more than you think — in the interest of protecting your Regents, your Court, or even the club as a whole.

Jack agreed with her, and Calder borrowed some kind of ability to report to them what was happening. He mentioned a power suppression chip.

“I wonder what she did to earn herself one of those.”

Heidi: I know, she must have been quite troublesome. But why not just kill her?

Calder gave them a name, Nefaria, and Heidi groaned.

Heidi: Great, I’ll enjoy having another Gia around about as much as I’d like a day in the desert. Her impudence is just astounding sometimes.

“She seemed like a nice enough girl when she sat with us yesterday.”

He replied as he cut into his waffles.

Zach explained to Alek who (and what) Ettore was. Alek shot back that he knew what a consigliere was, that he’d seen The Godfather. Zach chuckled at that.

“Right.”

He said replied simply, washing down his bacon with scotch. Haleigh continued to talk to the Italians, while Zach looked back at Alek.

“I’m glad she has you now, Alek. Cameron has never been particularly good for her, but you—“

He stopped, as Haleigh started back their way. There was a lot more he could say, but his opportunity was slipping by.

“You’ll take care of her.”

He finished, an amenable smile as Haleigh came back to their table. He and Alek weren’t friends, they barely ever interacted. And while Zach may have disliked Alek for his treatment of Ashley (a hurt Zach had helped heal), he could sense the difference in Alek when it came to Haleigh.

Haleigh only sat for a second before leaning in to whisper to Alek, and then they rose from the table to leave, with Alek bidding them safe travels. Zach rose as well, offering his hand to shake Alek’s as they left. He called after Haleigh as they started away, suggesting they take that walk before he left, she looked at him a moment.

Haleigh: Later, Zach.

She said before turning to go. Zach pivoted to face Cass and Damien as they approached the table. There was a trading of greetings and introductions. Cassandra kicked it off, hugging him and speaking in Italian. Under the veneer of happiness was a great deal of tumult within her, Zach could feel it in the hug.

“Grazie, Cass. Looks like Red is a good color on you.”

He said, praying to the Gods that she didn’t imply anything about their history that might make Brienne jealous or suspicious before Zach had a chance to explain Life Model Decoys to her. She introduced him to her date, apparently the Red Prince. Zach held out his hand again, shaking Damien’s firmly, offering a smile as well.

“Damien, nice to meet you. It sounds like congrats are in order for your own promotion.”

He said, as Brienne drank her scotch slowly. She was only mildly enthusiastic about new visitors to their table. Zach refilled her glass when the opportunity arose.

Damien

Damien and Cassie approached Brienne and Zach’s table. Though he never really interacted with the Black Queen before, he liked and respected her – something he would never admit to either his Queen or his King [especially his King]. Cassie immediately hugged him and apparently congratulated him on his kingship in Italian judging by the way Zach replied. Though he knew a bit of Italian, he wasn't as well-versed in it as Cassie was.

Zach: “Grazie, Cass. Looks like Red is a good color on you.”

Cass: *shyly*: “Well, thanks to this guy [motioning towards Damien], the color IS growing on me more and more.”

Cassie introduced him to Zach and the two men shook hands.

Zach: “Damien, nice to meet you. It sounds like congrats are in order for your own promotion.”

“Thank you, Your Grace. It feels really good, especially now that I have the freedom to help our Court move forward.”

Damien was a respectful lad with good manners – his mum had instilled it in him from a young age – so he, like Cassie, greeted Zach like the Black King. He may not be King officially yet, but there was no harm in helping him get used to the title. ;) He looked over at Brienne, who was less than enthused they were there, and then at Cassie before looking back at Zach.

“Well, the Princess and I must be going now. It was great to meet you, Your Majesty, and we’ll be looking forward to seeing what you bring to the table that is Hellfire Europe – as well as seeing what you have in store for the Black Court.”

Damien nodded politely at Brienne.

“It’s nice to see you as well, Your Majesty.”

After Cassie gave Zach another small hug, and after she said her goodbyes to both King and Queen, Damien led her away from the table towards the coffee bar. As she was getting her chai latte, Damien looked around and spotted Bretta sitting at a table with the American Black Queen and King as well as with the American White King and Princess. He sighed and braced himself as he realized what he had to do. He would’ve loved to have discussed his Court with others – without Bretta around – but know he saw the beauty of Bretta being there. Though she wasn’t going to like what he was going to say, he knew that Bretta was, at her core, fair and forgiving. He glanced over at Cassie and took her aside for a moment. He knew that the people Bretta was sitting with were not her favourites.

*quietly*: “We’re going to head over to where Bretta is.”

Cass: “Okay.”

He saw her glance over at the table and then back at him with a small smile. She touched his hand and nodded at him.

Cass: *reassuringly*: “I’ll be nice; I promise.”

He nodded, albeit distractedly. He felt her tug on his arm.

Cass: “Are you okay?”

He frowned as he looked from the table to Cassie and back again.

“I’m going to need you to back me up on what I’m going to say.”

He saw the confusion on her face as she looked from him to Bretta and back again.

Cass: *confused*: “Sure...?”

He sighed and turned his body so he was as close to Cassie as he could be. He spoke into her ear.

*softly*: “Bretta knows nothing about this. I’m not telling you what it is, so you can honestly say that you didn’t know a single thing about it.”

He pulled back and stared into Cassie’s wide-open eyes. She nodded silently and they continued on to the table where Bretta was sitting. He snuck a quick peek at her just before they arrived at the table. She was the picture of calm and she had a soft smile on her face. That was good. He faced forward again.

“Good morning, Your Majesties. We trust that our Queen has been outlining what our Court has been up to?”

He pulled up another chair as Cassie went around the table to sit beside Bretta.

Hellfire Club – Great Hall

Damien:
“Good morning, Your Majesties. I trust that our Queen has been outlining what our Court has to offer?”

:: Bretta looked up to see both Damien and Cassandra approaching the table. She studied Cassandra’s countenance. There was no outwardly show of any bitterness or hurt. Instead, Cassandra was the picture of calm, and she had a satisfied smile on her face. Bretta was quite pleased. She smiled up at them. Damien pulled up a chair on the opposite side whereas Cassandra came over to sit beside her. ::

“Good morning, darlings. Ava, John, Cameron...I would like to introduce you to my Rook-turned-Prince, Damien McAllister. Damien, you remember Erika.”

:: She gave a pleased smile when he nodded at the White Princess. ::

Damien: *flirtatiously*: “How could I ever forget a beauty such as yourself, Your Highness?”

:: Bretta exchanged a look with Cassandra. He had a reputation for being a playboy back home and, at any given time, he was usually surrounded by a bevy of women. Bretta shook her head in amusement. ::

*apologetically*: “He did arrive unannounced and uninvited, I’m afraid, but he was just so eager to meet our new Princess.”

Damien: *sheepishly*: “Yes, that is very much true, but, to be quite honest, it’s not the whole truth.”

“Oh?”

:: Bretta cocked both her head and eyebrow. She felt Cassandra’s arm going through hers and then felt her hand squeezing hers. She knew then that she probably wasn’t going to like what he had to say. Never taking her eyes off Damien, she leaned over to Cassandra. ::

*quietly*: “Did you know about this?”

Cassandra: *quietly*: “No, Your Majesty.”

:: Cassandra looked over at her and squeezed her hand again. Bretta got the signal that Cassandra knew nothing of what Damien was about to say. Damien looked rather uncomfortable and cleared his throat. ::

Damien: “My Queen, as soon as you left, on our King’s orders, we have been doing some transforming of our Court.”

:: Bretta made sure to keep her facial expression unemotional. Her lips were in a very thin line and her eyes flashed darkly. Her normally emerald green eyes now held just a touch of purple, a sure sign that she was getting very angry. Still, Bretta made sure to keep her voice calm and neutral. ::

“Go on, Damien.”

Damien: *nervously*: “It’s no secret that our Court appears to be the weakest. It’s also not a secret, back home anyway, that Alastair, our King, never trusted Archer Fairchild. Alastair had kept some things from you, Your Majesty.”

:: Bretta gripped Cassandra’s hand tightly. She may have looked calm and cool on the outside, but on the inside...she was seething. She was glad that nobody could read her mind; she was thinking many thoughts that were unbecoming of a lady such as herself. ::

Alastair, that little SHIT. That fucking, shitty, KING!!! He dare betray me?! ME?! After all I have done, and he fucking DARED to use MY Knight and Prince against me?! FUCK HIM.

:: Bretta’s eyes darkened considerably then, the purple becoming more and more apparent. Still, Bretta kept calm and her cool. She, of course, would back Damien with what he had to say, but when they got home, there WOULD be consequences. When she spoke, there was thinly veiled anger in her voice. ::

“I’m listening.”

Damien: *nervously*: “Alastair had to keep some things on the down low so as to not raise Archer’s interest in what we did.” *swallows hard*: “He was of the thought that Daniel was a spy for the former Black King and so he thought of your genuine love and care for him, Daniel, as a liability.” *small voice*: “We, the Knight and I, had to obey our King’s orders. Faith and I were never suspicious of Daniel, Your Grace.”

:: Bretta still stared at him with what appeared to be an unemotional expression, so Damien relaxed a bit under the assumption that she wouldn’t cause a scene. Bretta would never anyway, but there really would be consequences for both him and her Knight, and her Prince looked as if he knew that. Bretta nodded in the affirmative at Damien’s last two sentences. Her Knight and Prince had their issues with Daniel, but they never would’ve accused him of being a spy. No, that smelled of Alastair’s paranoia.::

When we get back, Alastair will face HUGE consequences.

:: Bretta made a mental note to get in touch with Brienne, Zach, Juliette, and Liam to back her up on getting Alastair OUT as the Red King. She would NOT stand for being made a fool in this manner.

Damien: “As you may know, Your Majesties [the American regents], the Red Court controls almost all of the arts and entertainment industry throughout Europe; ninety-five per cent, to be precise. We are currently making head way on the other five per cent. However, that wasn’t good enough for our King. I mean, sure, we’re raking in all kinds of money for Hellfire Europe, but Alastair wanted more. Now, as I’m sure you’re all aware of, I’m a fixer-slash-bounty hunter. Whatever people need, I go and help them; manipulate the situation. I also go and find people who don’t want to be found; who are in hiding from some pretty powerful people.”

“It’s true; Damien is very good at what he does. Although...”

:: Bretta smirked a bit despite what she was feeling. Damien McAllister was a true cad in every sense of the word. ::

“...he does believe that he is above the law.”

Damien: *gamely*: “Your Majesty, you know it’s true. I’ve lived several lifetimes without getting caught once.”

“That’s also true. But, Damien, you haven’t picked up much business for ‘fixing’ or for bounty hunting for a long time. Why are you talking about it now?”

:: Damien turned a bright shade of red. Her eyes darkened even more. Alastair. ::

That poor excuse for a man! He WILL feel my wrath!

:: She spotted Daniel out of the corner of her eye and knew that her emotions would be like a beacon for him. She was too enraged to care, though. ::

Damien: *sheepishly*: “Ah, that’s the thing, Your Grace. Alastair didn’t want Fairchild to become too interested in what we were accomplishing, lest he would conspire to take it out from under us, so Alastair had me stay, uh, close to home.”

:: Bretta couldn’t believe it. Her King, the person who was supposed to have her back, orchestrated her own Court to be dull as dishwater in order to not provoke the former Black King? ::

Oh, HELL no!

:: She reined herself in just enough to let Damien finish what he wanted to do. She would back him up publically, but in a private moment? Oh, she would throttle her Prince. ::

Damien: *hurriedly*: “Now we are coming back to the forefront, Your Graces. My business – both of them – are slowly starting to pick up and we’re also focusing on the different royal families all across Europe. You know, courting them, currying their favour. We really feel that we can persuade them to join Hellfire, if they haven’t already. Also, Red Security has been busy researching different avenues in which to go in, our clandestine informants have been dispatched all throughout the continent to gather information for us with regards to the art and entertainment industry and, thanks to our Russian sources, we just might break out into Asian Russia and hopefully into Asia proper.”

:: Bretta silently appraised Damien. It sounded good; it sounded really good. Only problem was, she didn’t know a damn thing about it. She was very hurt by this – and she was also indignant on Daniel’s behalf. Daniel was a marvelous person. Though he was, indeed, close to both Archer and Brienne – especially Brienne – he would’ve never been a spy. She was proud of herself for not showing any outward emotion, save for her eyes. On the outside, she still projected this cool and calm Queen while on the inside...the inside she was in such turmoil of emotion. She spotted the tell when Damien nodded at Cassandra, and so she silently turned her head towards Cassandra when she spoke. Ah, so her Prince lured the Princess into his plot. Though Bretta was infuriated with her entire Court, Cassandra would face no consequences. ::

Cassandra: “That’s where you come in, Your Graces. We already have a strong alliance with the Black Court, which is wonderful, but we also feel that we can learn from both the White and Red Courts as well. As you well know, I have firsthand knowledge that you each have unique qualities and qualifications that help make Hellfire what it is, and, because of that, we would be most excited to learn from all of you. Simply put, we would love to have a working relationship with all three Courts – not just one.

:: Bretta was impressed with Cassandra’s poise and tone. There was absolutely no hint of any bitterness whatsoever. Her expression was open and engaging. Bretta had an idea forming in her mind on how her new Princess could contribute to the Red Court. Cassandra could really be somebody. She turned her head when Damien spoke up again. ::

Damien: “And, in a gesture of goodwill, we’re willing to split the bounty [chuckling]. I, of course, will offer my services as both a fixer and a bounty hunter to you [Hellfire as a whole] as well.”

:: Bretta had to hand it to Damien. He was very good at what he did, and if he had enough passion for it, he went all out. Still, he was out of line for admitting that he kept secrets from his Queen in public – even if he had been under orders from his soon-to-be former king. Bretta was certain that everybody was waiting for her to publically flay him for a huge transgression such as this. That wasn’t her style. It was Rebecca’s style, for sure, but Bretta had made a promise that she wouldn’t BE like her predecessor. No, Bretta preferred to deal with things privately. ::

“Though Damien lacked in proper etiquette with regards to his own Queen...”

:: Bretta fixed Damien with a disapproving look. He at least had the decency to look like he knew he was in for it, from the way he stared down at the tabletop. ::

“...both he and my Princess are correct. We certainly have expanded by leaps and bounds and, yes, My Court would love to have a working relationship with all three of your Courts; not just one. I feel, as both my Prince and Princess do, that my Court could learn something from each of your Courts. I have been impressed by all of you this weekend and I have enjoyed the many conversations that I had with many of you. I would love for that to continue. In any relationship, however, it’s give-and-take; not just one party either giving or taking. As generous as my Prince’s offer is, and I am in complete agreement with him, I would like to know: what would you like from us?”

The Great Hall

Steel asked Bretta about her plans once she returned home.

Bretta: “Aside from breaking in my new Princess? No, I don’t have any special plans, but this weekend certainly has given me a few ideas on how to move my Court forward. I suppose I should go on holiday, goodness knows we all need one after this weekend.”

John grinned.

"I hope we haven't been that tiresome."

John and Ava decided to sit with Cameron, and invited Bretta to join them. Bretta greeted the other members of the White Court, though Gia immediately got up.

Gia: *distractedly*: “Good morning...I need to go.”

He looked at the rest of the table quizzically.

"How odd."

Haleigh made a speech announcing Zach's promotion, which didn't seem to sit too well with Ava since clearly it was a plot for Haleigh to amass more power. Food was served, which Steel politely tucked into, while attempting to chat with Cameron, who began to positively gush over his newfound daughter. He took a surrepticious glance at Ava, trying to gauge how she was taking this mystery daughter stuff. He was sure they were going to be discussing it as soon as this breakfast was over with. He felt Ava tense and her eyes narrow; he turned to see their former princess approaching the table with some guy he didn't know on her arm.

Damien: “Good morning, Your Majesties. I trust that our Queen has been outlining what our Court has to offer?”

Steel leveled an unamused gaze in the newcomer's direction.

"I don't see how our discussion has anything to do with you."

Bretta: “Good morning, darlings. Ava, John, Cameron...I would like to introduce you to my Rook-turned-Prince, Damien McAllister. Damien, you remember Erika. He did arrive unannounced and uninvited, I’m afraid, but he was just so eager to meet our new Princess.”

He turned his attention to the red queen, and gave her a reassuring smile.

"You were of course welcome to bring whichever members of your court you saw fit, Bretta."

There seemed to be some kind of confusion between this new prince, Cass and their queen. John stole another glance at Ava's face and thought it was very good for this young man that he wasn't on their own court.

Damien: “My Queen, as soon as you left, on our King’s orders, we have been doing some transforming of our Court. It’s no secret that our Court appears to be the weakest. It’s also not a secret, back home anyway, that Alastair, our King, never trusted Archer Fairchild. Alastair had kept some things from you, Your Majesty.”

Steel's eyes shifted to Cameron. This was highly irregular.

"Bretta, perhaps you would like the use of one of our conference rooms to meet with your staff more privately..."

But she allowed the prince to go on, so Steel sat back and watched.

Damien: *nervously*: “Alastair had to keep some things on the down low so as to not raise Archer’s interest in what we did.” *swallows hard*: “He was of the thought that Daniel was a spy for the former Black King and so he thought of your genuine love and care for him, Daniel, as a liability.”

Some would call that treason. But luckily, it wasn't his problem, or Ava's. He wasn't entirely sure why this weak excuse had been named Bretta's prince or why he was still alive, but he was imparting some interesting bits of information. The ERK thought Daniel was a spy for Archer? If true, it would be his death warrant. Daniel's close ties with Helena came to John's mind, but he knew that Ava and he were friends, and it just seemed unlikely that Daniel would risk so much just for revenge for someone like Helena. Still, didn't hurt to ask...

"Was he a spy?"

Damien: *small voice*: “We, the Knight and I, had to obey our King’s orders. Faith and I were never suspicious of Daniel, Your Grace. As you may know, Your Majesties [the American regents], the Red Court controls almost all of the arts and entertainment industry throughout Europe; ninety-five per cent, to be precise. We are currently making head way on the other five per cent. However, that wasn’t good enough for our King. I mean, sure, we’re raking in all kinds of money for Hellfire Europe, but Alastair wanted more. Now, as I’m sure you’re all aware of, I’m a fixer-slash-bounty hunter."

John reached out and gave Ava's hand a squeeze, because he could feel her eyes rolling up into her head. Why the hell would they know that? Why would they care? This guy was clearly too big for his britches, and John felt concerned for Bretta's well-being. This was the sort of person who felt he was owed things. And at Hellfire, it didn't work that way. John's opinion was only confirmed when the guy went on to make outlandish statements of his own prowess.

Damien: *sheepishly*: “Ah, that’s the thing, Your Grace. Alastair didn’t want Fairchild to become too interested in what we were accomplishing, lest he would conspire to take it out from under us, so Alastair had me stay, uh, close to home.”

Damien: *hurriedly*: “Now we are coming back to the forefront, Your Graces."

Praise Jesus. Steel was running out of patience with this verbal incontinence, from an interloper no less.

"Please, get to the point where this has anything to do with the rest of us."

He glanced at Ava.

"I understand your desire for multiple alliances, but we can't decide that for the other courts - you'll have to discuss that with them."

He nodded to Cameron in acknowledgment.

"That was what this weekend was all about. Though I am sorry that you don't feel that a relationship with the Black Court is sufficient."

Damien: “And, in a gesture of goodwill, we’re willing to split the bounty [chuckling]. I, of course, will offer my services as both a fixer and a bounty hunter to you [Hellfire as a whole] as well.”

"Thank you for the generous offer, Bretta"

He smiled at her before fixing his attention back on the upstart, the smile fading.

"as I'm sure this is an not an offer you would make without your Queen's sanction. I can only speak for the Black Court, but we prefer to use our own Rook for that purpose."

Bretta: “Though Damien lacked in proper etiquette with regards to his own Queen...both he and my Princess are correct.

John cleared his throat.

"Access to your contacts in new markets for Cassadine Enterprises, and in exchange, we would of course utilize your venues for all of our corporate events. We are, of course, also grateful that you have allowed Daniel to make a place here with us. But know that any aggression from your king towards our new Bishop will not be received well. We would like your assurance that he comes here under no threat."

Hellfire -- The Great Hall

She eased back into her chair next to Alek, her emotions roiling, or maybe it was just her breakfast. She had done well to avoid looking at Cameron the whole time she was in here, but now that she’d seen him it was too late to unsee again. Back at her table the view was no better. She asked Alek if he was done here, and he agreed. Her gaze fell to his plate, still half full of food. Her lips pursed tightly.

“Have room service deliver a couple of plates to the Red King’s suite.”

She told a passing server, that way he could still eat. Plus if she tossed her own breakfast, she could replenish what she lost. She swallowed hard and then nodded to Zach and Brienne as Alek bid them goodbye. Zach rose and shook Alek’s hand, before reaching out to her.

Zach: Haleigh....

They shared a look, for a moment or two.

Zach: We should take a walk. For old times sake, before I go.

“Later, Zach.”

She replied before turning to go. She felt like slumping out of the hall but she kept her posture as perfect as always, at least until they left the room, and then she relaxed a bit. Alek asked her if everything was ok. She gave him a small smile.

“Fine, really. Just a little queasy. I know you were deeply enjoying Brienne’s company, but I just didn’t want to look at her stupid face another second. You know, maybe we should have stayed. I could’ve puked on her.”

She stopped, a better idea occurring to her.

“Or on Cameron. Or on that photo of Cameron’s love child with Elena. Let’s go back.”

She said, but then she shook her head, her hand clenching into a fist. The anger made the nausea subside.

“No, I’m more likely to punch Cameron than puke on him. Ughck. I’m being such a girl lately, I hate this.”

She sighed slowly, releasing her fist.

“I just want to take off these clothes and crawl back into bed. Can we do that?”

The Great Hall

Alek watched Haleigh converse with the stranger curiously. Zach, however, surprised him by changing the topic of conversation.

Zach: “I’m glad she has you now, Alek. Cameron has never been particularly good for her, but you—“

Alek's eyes moved from Haleigh to Zach. The admission that Cameron was a dick was good to hear for once, especially from someone who up to five minutes ago was supposed to be loyal to the man.

Zach: “You’ll take care of her.”

But then again, Zach was Zach. Probably trying to get into his pants.

"You couldn't have brought this up with Haleigh ten years or so ago?"

He took a drink of his beer, then locked eyes with Zach as he set his glass down on the table.

"But I will. Take care of her. You have my word, for what that's worth to you."

His eyes moved back to Haleigh, who was now coming back towards them.

"She and those little ones are the most important things in the world to me."

There was a seriousness, a sincerity, to his voice that he wasn't accustomed to using. When she reached them, Haleigh sat but was ready to leave, so Alek stood to escort her out. Zach got up out of his seat and extended his hand. Alek paused for a moment, then reached out and shook it, nodding to the new king.

When they were out of the Hall, he asked Haleigh if she was okay, the concern evident in his voice.

Haleigh: “Fine, really. Just a little queasy. I know you were deeply enjoying Brienne’s company, but I just didn’t want to look at her stupid face another second. You know, maybe we should have stayed. I could’ve puked on her. Or on Cameron. Or on that photo of Cameron’s love child with Elena. Let’s go back.”

He started to laugh, then saw Haleigh's clenched fist.

Haleigh: “No, I’m more likely to punch Cameron than puke on him. Ughck. I’m being such a girl lately, I hate this.”

Alek reached out and covered her fist with he hand.

"Well, personally, I don't mind if you puke on or punch Cameron. Both at the same time would also be extra special."

He saw Haleigh relax, the fist opening.

"But reacting normally to people behaving distastefully doesn't make you a girl."

He moved closer, his hands hovering on either side of her waist.

"Though I quite like that you're a girl..."

A prepossessing smile crept to his lips.

Haleigh: “I just want to take off these clothes and crawl back into bed. Can we do that?”

"Yes, ma'am. I can absolutely make that happen."

The smile became a laugh.

"Ashley can handle the rest of the goodbyes - even she can't fuck that up - so my schedule is completely free to cater to your every desire."

He started walking her towards the Red Wing.

"We can pretend we're in the safe house. All we need are some chocolates."

He fired off a quick text to the kitchen.

"And thankfully, I know a guy."

The Great Hall

He knew that it was going to be a bit awkward for the others, but he was glad that both Ava and John indulged him when it came to his daughter, Carolina.

John: "Aw, Cam, she's beautiful. I think she has your smile."

Cameron smirked.

"Let's hope that's all she inherits from me."

John: "It's great that you'll finally get to spend some time with her."

Bretta: "Oh, how lovely."

"Better late than never. Plus, it gives me an excuse to see Hamilton again. And I'm sure Carolina will let me sing along louder than Haleigh did."

The talk was small and light, exactly what he was looking for. It felt good to have John and Ava by his side, and despite her barbed outbursts, Erika for the most part was behaving.

Bretta: "Cameron, she's beautiful."

"It's a family trait."

The White King smiled.

Gia left almost without warning as Cameron's eyes met a beautiful blonde woman making a beeline for his wife. The man, he knew and as she squinted his eyes, he could only get the faintest idea of who she was for some reason - which meant she either had a spell on her, which Cameron's mystical alarms didn't detect, or she had been put through the mental manipulation ringer, and the signature of that work was made to clear to him. He kept an eye on things over there, splitting his focus back to the group. Soon, Cassandra and a mysterious man in red approached the table, putting Cameron a bit on edge. Cassandra was always a time bomb, and this man seemed a little too comfortable with her for his liking. She may have been the new Red Princess, but her blood was black. If anything she was the property of MysTech - so if anything he was a bit territorial.

Damien: "Good morning, Your Majesties. We trust that our Queen has been outlining what our Court has been up to?"

John: "I don't see how our discussion has anything to do with you."

They took a seat as Cameron gave a smirk of bemusement. This man was certainly cocky. Thankfully, Bretta took the lead before Cameron kicked him from the table.

Bretta: "Good morning, darlings. Ava, John, Cameron...I would like to introduce you to my Rook-turned-Prince, Damien McAllister. Damien, you remember Erika."

Jesus the Red Court needed to learn to read a room.

Damien: "How could I ever forget a beauty such as yourself, Your Highness?"

Erika: "Well I would certainly pay you to try."

That was one good thing about his sister - she gave no fucks and often was able to get away with saying things others might not.

Bretta: "He did arrive unannouced and uninvited, I'm afraid, but he was just so eager to meet our new Princess."

John: "You were of course welcome to bring whichever members of your court you saw fit, Bretta."

Cameron and John locked eyes at the absurdity and gall of Bretta's prince.

to John via thought call: "the fuck?"

John: "Bretta, perhaps you would like to the use of one of our conference rooms to meet with your staff more privately..."

John was a good man, because Cameron had no intention of stopping anybody from speaking in this moment. He felt like he had been a mess this weekend and here was a pretty red package about to repeatedly put his foot in his mouth and show his court's ass to not one, not two, but THREE leaders of American courts. Go on, indeed.

Damien: "Alastair had to keep some things on the down low so as to not raise Archer's interest in what we did. He was of the thought that Daniel was a spy for the former Black King and so he thought of your genuine love and care for him. Daniel, as a liability."

The White King laughed out loud. This was good. The Red Prince basically just said that the person Bretta made a TRADE for was somebody her own king didn't trust. And more than that, she didn't even know he didn't trust Daniel. It did not make Bretta look in charge of her court, or do her any favors, and Cameron would have frankly killed this Damien on the spot.

"I've never met a former Rook with such loose lips."

John: "Was he a spy?"

"Yes, that too."

Damien: “We, the Knight and I, had to obey our King’s orders.

Cameron laughed outright and took a sip of his martini.

"Fixer? Priceless."

Bretta: "It's true; Damien is very good at what he does. Although...he does believe that he is above the law."

Erika: "As a licensed psychiatrist, I'd like to offer a more....formal diagnosis as to what Damien might believe about himself."

Cameron pinched Erika's thigh under the table. All of this information was clearly news to The Red Queen, and Cameron came into his right frame of mind, feeling a bit bad for her. It was also somewhat of a prophetic thing - peering into the future of what The White Court might become should he and his wife not get their shit together. Bretta pressed further and Damien responded.

Damien: "“Now we are coming back to the forefront, Your Graces.

Cameron was uninterested. The only goods the Red Court could provide him would be locations to freely move weapons or drugs through. Other than that, Cameron was a snob of the highest pedigree. He didn't need an alliance to eat cavier.

John: "Please get to the point where this has anything to do with the rest of us."

"And quickly."

Cassandra: "That’s where you come in, Your Graces. Simply put, we would love to have a working relationship with all three Courts – not just one."

John: "I understand your desire for multiple alliances, but we can't decide that for the other courts - you'll have to discuss that with them."

John shot a look at Cameron. They both were simply awestruck at what was happening in front of them. It made Cameron feel a lot better about this weekend. Now if only as many people were watching this as were watching him implode his marriage last night.

John: "That was what this weekend was all about. Though I am sorry that you don't feel a relationship with the Black Court is sufficient."

"I mean they gave you their turncoat, John. What are you talking about?"

Damien: "And, in a gesture of good will, we're willing to split the bounty. I, of course, will offer my services as both a fixer and a bounty hunter to you as well."

John: "Thank you for the generous offer, Bretta. As i'm sure this is not an offer you would make without your Queen's sanction. I can only speak for the Black Court, but we prefer to use our own Rook for that purpose."

Bretta: “Though Damien lacked in proper etiquette with regards to his own Queen...both he and my Princess are correct. In any relationship, however, it’s give-and-take; not just one party either giving or taking. As generous as my Prince’s offer is, and I am in complete agreement with him, I would like to know: what would you like from us?”

John led with business.

John: "Access to your contacts in new markets for Cassadine Enterprises, and in exchange, we would of course utilize your venues for all of our corporate events. We are, of course, also grateful that you have allowed Daniel to make a place here with us. But know that any aggression from your king towards our new Bishop will not be received well. We would like your assurance that he comes here under no threat."

Cameron finished his martini, processing this.

"I will not work with a King who refuses to show his face. Donovan, is it? You've clearly just pulled one on your own Queen, and she is being the visage of strength and pose not grinding your jawline into the table with her fists. You came here, pitched an idea like it was your own, like you have the POWER to address either John, Ava or myself as equals, and have proved nothing but the fact that your "fixing" skills leave much to be desired, and that you would willingly throw your own Queen to the wolves and expect HER to back YOU and your KING'S play because of her loyalty. You forget, before we were Kings or Queens, we were Bishops and Rooks...and PRINCES. We know what goes into the game of Hellfire - so don't continue to insult any of us here by feigning your desperation not to work against your Queen because you had to [air quotes] "honor your King".

[turning to Bretta]

"I have enjoyed your company this weekend, this little annoyance aside. You tell your King that if he wants to work with The White Court, he can most certainly meet me in person to discuss it. I will however, support your efforts to go home and clean house in whatever way you see fit. And if it involves me bending this one [pointing to Damien] over my knee and spanking him like baby until he understands how to approach his superiors, I'll gladly do it. And until that happens, you have my word that this little "display" will not be spoken of again, at least not from my lips."

[thinking]

"My trade is fair. You personally have my support in return for your support...of Brienne Shaw."

[quickly]

"And Zachary Armani as her King. Her new King is one of my own, and I'd like to see them both succeed."

He was not mentioning the fact that he was in a formal alliance with Brienne because he was in mixed company, and Brienne had just gotten off the hook for helping with the Ava murder plot. He watched as people began to leave.

"Now I think we've all had enough excitement for one weekend. Shall we wrap this up?"

Cass isn't ANYONE's property! HA!
Hellfire Club – Great Hall

:: This was not going well at all. Though Damien’s intentions were pure, he did admit that he had kept things from his own Queen. She could see how eager he was to please her, to show that he was a good choice for Prince. Unfortunately for him, he was going about it all wrong. ::

:: As Damien was going on and on [and on and on], Bretta could feel herself grow angrier by the second. She was angry at Damien, for unintentionally humiliating her in public, she was angry at her both Damien and Faith for keeping important details from her, though they were operating on their king’s orders, but, most of all, she was the angriest at Alastair for not coming to her about any of this. He was suppposed to be her King, her partner, the person who should always have had her back. ::

:: After Damien was done talking, Bretta backed him up even though he certainly didn’t deserve it. Oh, how she wished that Damien had come to her, or even talk to Cassandra, regarding this kind of information and plan! Not only would she boot Alastair OUT as king but Damien left her no choice but to relieve him of his position. ::

“Damien, I...”

:: Nobody seemed to hear her though. She glanced over at Cassandra. Though the succubus was calm and had a smile on her face, albeit a strained one, she had turned a bit pale. Still, her Princess jumped in when Damien nodded at her. Cassandra did an excellent job of her ‘task’ – but Bretta could tell that she was uneasy. Bretta felt bad; the poor dear was probably shanghaied into helping her soon-to-be former Prince. ::

:: Damien offered his services in a gesture of goodwill, and though Bretta smiled weakly at his offer, she knew that the Americans probably had their own men. John rebuked Damien and thankfully, Damien had the good sense to not say a word. Bretta gave Damien a small smile and backed him up by first acknowledging that he was completely out of turn before agreeing with what he had said.”

Former king.”

:: Damien looked startled and Cassandra was quite shocked too. ::

“That’s right, darlings. Alastair will no longer be king. Damien, do not make Alastair aware of these arrangements and that is an order from your Queen.”

:: Bretta fixed her insolent [former] Prince with a hard glare. Damien nodded numbly. Bretta closed her eyes and sighed, taking a moment to recover. ::

“As for Daniel...John, Ava, Cameron, you have my word that Alastair will not make any outright attacks – verbal or physical – against him. He will be under no threat whatsoever."

:: Bretta fixed Damien with an almost murderous look. She stared into Damien’s eyes as she spoke her next words. ::

“Daniel may be a lot of things, but he would never be a spy. Daniel is a marvelous person and my only regret is that I couldn’t find a place for him on my Court, not really, that I couldn’t find a place that he so rightfully deserves.”

:: Bretta smiled as she looked upon both John and Ava. ::

“Cassadine Enterprises will have those contacts indeed. You have my word.”

:: Bretta hoped that that would settle things but Cameron had something to say. ::

Cameron: "I will not work with a King who refuses to show his face. We know what goes into the game of Hellfire - so don't continue to insult any of us here by feigning your desperation not to work against your Queen because you had to [air quotes] "honor your King".”

:: Bretta could see Damien opening his mouth to speak up. Bretta gritted her teeth. ::

*furious*: “Damien, not one word.”

:: She turned to Cassandra and squeezed her hand. ::

“Please, Cassandra. Take Damien away from here. Bring him to a small room and wait for me.”

Cassandra: *relieved*: “Yes, Your Majesty.”

:: Bretta watched as her Princess went over to Damien and gently tugged on his arm. Damien got up and Cassandra, with her arm around his waist, led him away from their table. Cameron turned to her. ::

Cameron: "I have enjoyed your company this weekend, this little annoyance aside. You tell your King that if he wants to work with The White Court, he can most certainly meet me in person to discuss it. I will however, support your efforts to go home and clean house in whatever way you see fit. You personally have my support in return for your support...of Brienne Shaw. And Zachary Armani as her King. Her new King is one of my own, and I'd like to see them both succeed."

:: Bretta visibly winced at his ‘cleaning house’ remarks. She had to smooth things over. ::

“Your Graces, I am deeply sorry for the actions of my...of Damien. He was overly eager to make a name for himself. He’s a good lad but he had only just got the promotion this morning so he is, unfortunately, too green to be making such demands. He does mean well, though, and his intentions are pure.”

:: Bretta clenched both of her fists and her eyes flashed purple for a second. ::

Alastair, on the other hand, has no excuse. He is a very weak man, I’m afraid, and I assure you all that he will not longer be the Red King. Damien will be properly punished as well.”

:: Bretta calmed down as she turned to Cameron. ::

“Brienne Shaw will always have my support, and so, too, will Zachary Armani.”

Cameron: "Now I think we've all had enough excitement for one weekend. Shall we wrap this up?"

*relieved*: “Yes, by all means. I have to get into contact with my other sister Queens and their Kings and make them aware of what I have decided.”

The Great Hall

To be a spectator to the conversation that was happening was uncomfortable, to say the least. John bore Bretta no ill-will; in fact, he quite liked her. And it was admirable that she strove to have her court's back, even when they did not appear to have her's. But there were consequences to what they were witnessing, and he for one hoped that Bretta would survive them. But it was by no means assured, which saddened him.

It rankled him a bit that the Red Court was so openly belittling the arrangement that had been made between them and the Black. And he also knew it would not sit well with Ava. He mentioned it before Ava did, expressing his disappointment that they were not more satisfied with the alliance already made.

Cameron: "I mean they gave you their turncoat, John. What are you talking about?"

Steel flashed an annoyed glare at the White King. Though, Cameron was speaking the truth. To have sent a spy to them would show an unimaginable lack of good faith, and would of course require retribution. As it stood, Daniel would have to be questioned about his involvement with Archer. Which even if baseless would almost certainly mean some sort of payback from Daniel aimed at his former court. John wondered exactly how Daniel would approach the situation, and was interested to find out.

John asked point blank for assurance about their new Bishop, that he would not come under attack from Bretta's king.

Bretta:Former king. That’s right, darlings. Alastair will no longer be king. Damien, do not make Alastair aware of these arrangements and that is an order from your Queen.”

John had to purposely keep himself from scoffing. This one would run as fast as he could to warn his king.

Bretta: “As for Daniel...John, Ava, Cameron, you have my word that Alastair will not make any outright attacks – verbal or physical – against him. He will be under no threat whatsoever. Daniel may be a lot of things, but he would never be a spy. Daniel is a marvelous person and my only regret is that I couldn’t find a place for him on my Court, not really, that I couldn’t find a place that he so rightfully deserves. Cassadine Enterprises will have those contacts indeed. You have my word.”

Steel nodded. He would take her word, for now, but would hold her to it.

When it was his turn, Cameron reprimanded the upstart prince in a way that made John a bit jealous - he felt less of a need than John to keep up appearances. And made it clear that the White Court would not deal with someone of lower rank, that they expected Alistair to come in person if he wanted something. Bretta shrewdly sent Damien away then, with Cassandra to baby-sit him, which allowed Cameron to continue in a more pleasant manner.

Cameron: "I have enjoyed your company this weekend, this little annoyance aside. You tell your King that if he wants to work with The White Court, he can most certainly meet me in person to discuss it. I will however, support your efforts to go home and clean house in whatever way you see fit. And if it involves me bending this one [pointing to Damien] over my knee and spanking him like baby until he understands how to approach his superiors, I'll gladly do it. And until that happens, you have my word that this little "display" will not be spoken of again, at least not from my lips."

John's eyes slid to Cameron, thoughtfully. The message was clear.

Bretta apologized for her prince, as she had to, and reiterated that Alastair would be ejected as king. It was a dangerous thing to admit to three foreign regents, though if Alastair was indeed the man he was portrayed to be, he would have little support. And Bretta needed to shore up the credibility of her court, and using Alastair as a scapegoat was a good play.

Cameron went on to give what he wanted in return: support of Zach and Brienne. John didn't think that would be a problem, or even necessary: Brienne was powerful by all accounts, and Zach was a good man and would be a good king. Unlike Archer. Only Liam and Juliette currently had the power to remove either of them, and they had no reason to. It was in their best interest to keep the other courts weak. He wouldn't be surprised if the Red King had been egged on by a seed planted by the White Court.

The biggest threat to Brienne John could see was sitting next to him in a black dress.

Cameron: "Now I think we've all had enough excitement for one weekend. Shall we wrap this up?"

Bretta: *relieved*: “Yes, by all means. I have to get into contact with my other sister Queens and their Kings and make them aware of what I have decided.”

"Allow us to walk you out."

John rose, pulling out Ava and then Bretta's chairs. He allowed the ladies to go ahead of him, but as they approached the mansion's foyer he gently took Bretta's arm and pulled her aside.

"I feel I must give you some advice, Red Queen: be wary of your new prince, and above all do not make him your king. It is clear he is untrustworthy at best, working against you at worst. If he were on my court he would not survive your king's ouster. I fear if he does he will be plotting to take your crown from you from that moment forward."

He rose to his full height.

"The Black Court stands by its friends. Please, call on us if you have need."

He offered his hand, and a smile.

"Farewell. Good luck."

Hellfire - The Great Hall

It had been a close call. There for a moment, they had the makings of a duel. His Vampire Queen was just crazy enough to engage, and Liam could see fire in Ashley’s eyes. He intervened, before it spun out of control, before their alliance went up in smoke.

Juliette was quick to apologize, and Ashley was gracious enough to accept. Thankfully, Savage called for Whiskey and the Healer was prompt in his efforts. As the food was served, they discussed Zach’s ascension to their Black Court. Ashley was surprised, but Juliette explained why she and Liam weren’t.

Ashley: He can be pretty damn convincing.

Juliette: Ees dzat so?

She asked, her gaze shifting over to look at the new Black King. Liam, who wasn’t terribly interested in the man, did finally accept that he’d have to pay him a bit more attention. Ashley acknowledged that they would soon have the chance to find out about him for themselves. Juliette giggled into her wine glass.

“Good luck getting Brienne to share.”

Juliette: Darling... don’t be angry vit me...

She said, her hand in his hair. Ashley was ordering whiskey and Savage was staring at his plate. He turned to look at Juliette, and was struck by her golden eyes again. He was about to tell her he wasn’t angry with her, when Ashley spoke up again, proposing the toast that their next visit be longer.

“Cheers.”

He replied, lifting his coffee mug. Juliette raised her glass a moment and drank deeply from it, while across the table Savage growled something unintelligible. Ashley offered to send for some breakfast for Juliette, as the rest of them began to eat eggs and bacon.

Juliette: No, no. Your Vhite Queen ‘as been providential, but dzank you.”

Former king.”

:: To be honest, Bretta didn’t mean to let it slip that she was planning on ousting her own King but it only showed just how angry she was with him. She warned Damien not to get into touch with Alastair regarding this new information before reassuring the Americans that Daniel Reed would not be attacked by her former king. ::

Even if I have to execute the man myself.

:: She was that hurt and upset with him. She knew about his dislike for Daniel, as well as with Liam [because he couldn’t really flirt with Juliette anymore], Archer, and even Brienne. Bretta also knew that he was more preoccupied – and possessive – of his title and knew that he wouldn’t go willingly. In fact, it very well could end in his death. Cameron said his piece about not working with a man who didn’t show his face, which was quite understandable given the circumstances, before he went in on Damien. ::

Oh, this won’t be good.

:: Bretta tasked Cassandra, the only person who was doing their job besides herself, to take Damien away from the table before there was a murder of yet another European Inner Circle member. She would speak to Damien about recklessly roping Cassandra into his plan, as well as many other things, later. Cameron made a remark about ‘cleaning house’ and it pained her to realize that he was right. She apologized on behalf of Damien, as she couldn’t trust that he could pull off an apology diplomatically – not after this anyway, and made a daring statement about Alastair’s removal as King. Damien would be properly punished as well. ::

What a mess.

:: This thing with Damien wasn’t supposed to have happened. She had trusted him. Her Princess trusted him. He certainly couldn’t be trusted with sensitive information anymore. Bretta made a mental note to text Hudson about the recent, and disastrous, developments. Cameron wanted to wrap it up. ::

Thank heavens.

*relieved*: “Yes, by all means. I have to get into contact with my other sister Queens and their Kings and make them aware of what I have decided.”

John: “Allow us to walk you out.”

:: Bretta nodded gratefully and let John pull out her chair. Now standing, she went over to Cameron and kissed him on the cheek. ::

“Cameron, aside from my Prince’s detestable behaviour, it was a pleasure.”

:: Bretta turned and walked with Ava and John as they headed out of the Hall. She was surprised when John took her by the arm and pulled her aside. She was even more surprised by what he said. ::

John: "I feel I must give you some advice, Red Queen: be wary of your new prince, and above all do not make him your king. It is clear he is untrustworthy at best, working against you at worst. If he were on my court he would not survive your king's ouster. I fear if he does he will be plotting to take your crown from you from that moment forward."

:: Bretta blinked once. It had never occurred to her that Damien would be seeking the crown through ulterior means and motives. ::

*surprised*: “Thank you, John. I will certainly take your words under advisement. Please be assured that Damien will not be King under any circumstances.”

John: "The Black Court stands by its friends. Please, call on us if you have need."

:: Bretta stared into his eyes, wanting him to really understand what she was saying. It would be nice to play nice with the others, yes, but she still considered the alliance between the ERC and the ABC a huge WIN. ::

“Yes, and I am so very pleased to have an alliance with your Court.”

:: Bretta shook his hand and smiled as well. ::

John: "Farewell. Good luck."

*chuckling*: “Thank you. Something tells me that I’m going to need it.”

Hellfire Club – Great Hall

:: Bretta leaned over to her and spoke to her in quiet undertones. Cass knew that her new Queen wasn’t pleased with Damien. Hell, she wasn’t pleased. He should’ve told her because then she would’ve definitely given him some sage advice. ::

Bretta: *frustrated*: “Please, Cassandra. Take Damien away from here. Bring him to a small room and wait for me.”

:: Bretta gave her a small smile and squeezed her hand. ::

Oh, thank God.

*relieved*: “Yes, Your Majesty.”

:: Cass quickly got up and went to Damien, tugging on his arm gently, speaking in soft undertones. ::

*gently*: “Let’s go.”

:: Silently Damien followed after her. She could feel his shame. He was just trying to help, after all. He had been promoted to Prince just that morning and, unfortunately, he had been too boastful; too green. He was overly eager to please Bretta – and Alastair – and that didn’t come off well at all. Cass hoped that Bretta would be able to smooth things over. She wrapped her arm around Damien’s waist and snuggled up against him. He was there for her when she needed him and now she would return the favour. They left the Great Hall and she led the way to a small, private, alcove just down the hall from where they came from. She entered the room and he passed by her and went to sit on the loveseat. Cass shut the door and leaned against it, her arms crossed. ::

Damien: *quietly*: “I screwed up.”

:: Cass sighed and went over to sit beside him. She took his hand in hers and squeezed it gently. She hated to do this, to even ask for his phone, but Damien majorly fucked up and, curiously enough, she was now on the other side of things that she could somewhat understand the frustrations that everybody else had towards her. ::

*softly*: “May I please see your phone?”

:: Damien looked confused but pulled it out of his jacket and handed it to her. She immediately turned it off and placed it in her bag. ::

Damien: “HEY!” *sighing*: “I wasn’t going to get in touch with Alastair, Cassie." *hurt*: "Don’t you trust me?”

“Look, Damien, you didn’t just screw up – you majorly fucked up. I actually do trust you but right now, when it comes to our Court, I don’t. You made Bretta look like a fool and you purposely didn’t tell me what you were doing.”

Damien: “I didn’t want you –“

“...’to get into trouble.’ I know. Here’s the thing: I know these people. I’ve been with them for a long time. They don’t like overconfidence – unless it is them who are overconfident. They like to be the ones in charge. You should’ve told me so that I, at the very least, could’ve warned you. Not only did you bring up sensitive information in front of other Hellfire regents, but you also tanked our Court’s credibility. Not to mention, you alluded to the strong possibility of the new American Black Bishop being a spy. How is Bretta supposed to trust you now? How am I, in my duties as Red Princess, supposed to trust you?”

:: Cass looked away for a moment. She liked Damien; she really liked him. He kept her calm and safe. She felt protected by him. Nobody else had made her feel this way in a long time. For the first time, she had people who loved and cared for her. She would make sure that she would never be used as a pawn in anybody’s game again. She looked at Damien again. ::

*hard voice*: “I won’t be used as anybody’s pawn ever again.”

Damien: “Cassie, no. NO.”

:: He took her hands in his and looked into her eyes. She could see the care that he had for her in his eyes. ::

Damien: “You...are so right. I got a little too excited and I...probably blew things for Bretta.”

:: He rested his forehead against hers. ::

Damien: *disappointed*: “I don’t deserve to be Prince.”

:: He gently fell into her arms and Cass shifted her legs so that she could hold him more comfortably. ::

Damien: “I was so looking forward to us being Princess and Prince together. I had so many ideas for our Court...there’s no way Bretta will keep me as Prince now.”

:: Cass wished that she could offer him some encouragement but, like he said, there was no way Bretta could let him stay on as Prince. Cass felt her stomach drop as she realized that, because of his fuck up, there was no way that he could be allowed to even be a small part of the Red Court. She didn’t say any of this to Damien, though. He most likely already knew this revelation deep down. There was really nothing else to say so they continued to sit like that together as they both lasped into companionable silence, each with their own thoughts, as they waited for Bretta to come and talk to Damien.

The Great Hall

Breakfast was finally wrapping up, the rest of the meal going without incident, but it felt like it had taken all day rather than just a couple of hours. She was so exhausted that Ashley would have loved to just crawl back into bed and sleep the rest of the day away. Bretta had already left the hall, with John, Ava and Cameron in tow. Alek and Haleigh also were nowhere to be found. She didn't want to think about what they were doing.

So when Liam and Juliette rose to take their leave, so did Ashley. She walked alongside them towards where the visitors were gathering to say their goodbyes and then return home. As they passed Bretta, Ashley stopped, then reached out and touched her arm, giving her a smile.

"Safe travels home, Bretta. I so enjoyed our time together this weekend."

With another smile she returned to Liam and Juliette.

"Well, I guess this is goodbye."

She reached out to give Juliette a hug, then kiss both her cheeks.

"I hope to see you both again very soon."

She clasped Liam's hand, and kissed both his cheeks as well.

"You will both be greatly missed."

She took Juliette's hand in her own.

"I can't tell you how much I value our new friendship. I'm here, if you need anything."

Hellfire — The Great Hall

The White Queen told her to stick around, after removing the implant that crippled her. Adriana smiled, and as she went back to her table she tried to decide on the first thing she wanted to do with her powers. Ettore pulled out her chair and she sat back down, rubbing her thumb across the pads of her fingers, smiling until her sister sat down in Ettore’s chair.

Gia lied that it was nice to see Adriana, and expressed surprise that she was with Ettore. Ettore had nowhere to sit now, and just remained standing behind Adriana, his hand on the back of her chair. He said nothing, and neither did Adriana. For now they both just watched the younger Nefaria, who looked Adriana up and down before telling her she looked beautiful as always. Adriana pulled out her phone and started tap tapping away at the screen.

“Darren, here’s the number to that broker I told you about. I guarantee he’ll triple your investments by week’s end, or I’ll pay you the difference myself.”

Darren: That’s confidence.

“And the beginning of a long, prosperous friendship, I hope.”

She replied, glancing up at the lawyer, who nodded. Her gaze shifted to the doctor.

“Jasper, I’ll call you later with pricing on the sss......”

Jasper: Sufentanil.

“Ah, yes, could you text me the name? I’ve no doubt we can undercut the costs you’re paying now.”

Jasper: I look forward to hearing from you.

“I won’t make you wait any longer than I have to. Now, gentlemen, if I could be so rude as to request the table all to myself.... the White Bishop and I have unfinished business to discuss.”

They understood, or pretended to, as they both got up from their seats, and took turns shaking Ettore’s and Adriana’s hands. After warm goodbyes to the two new clients, Adriana turned to Gia coldly while Ettore sat down next to her.

“I don’t know what kind of deal you made with Diana to get rid of me, but she’s dead. Did she give you my mask as well as my rightful place in the Inner Circle?”

She asked, crossing her legs and folding her hands in her lap to keep from attacking her sibling.

Hellfire -- The Great Hall

There was more talk at the table between his Queen and the Europeans. AJ stayed out of it, as it was the only sure way to prevent further provocation. He was a little disappointed that his Ashley forgave the Dead Thing so easily, but he didn’t dare express it. He knew that alliances were important to her, and this one especially, which was why he was internally kicking himself for almost ruining it.

It wasn’t nearly soon enough, but breakfast did eventually end. They rose from the table, with AJ following his Queen silently. They paused when they reached a large grouping, where all the Europeans were beginning to gather and give goodbyes. AJ held his breath to stifle a growl as the Dead Thing and her King embraced his Ashley. Hugs and Kisses were exchanged, as Savage folded his arms across his chest.

Ashley: Well I guess this is goodbye.

Liam: Unfortunately, far too soon.

More like much too late.

Ashley: I hope to see you both again very soon.

Juliette: You vill, ve promeese.

AJ hoped desperately that their idea of soon was at least a year from now. He watched carefully as his Ashley took the European White King’s hand and kissed his cheeks, saying they would be greatly missed. The man smiled warmly, and stared into his Ashley’s eyes, a little too deeply for AJ’s liking.

Liam: You’ll certainly be missed in return. Has anyone ever told you how beautiful your eyes are?

“I have.”

AJ said, unable to keep quiet any longer. Liam turned to look at him as if he suddenly remembered AJ was standing there, half a foot away.

Liam: Of course. It was nice to meet you as well, sir.

The King said, offering a hand to shake. AJ uncrossed his arms to take the man’s hand. He could have crushed it in his grip, but he restrained himself. Barely.

“Thank you for inviting me to join My Queen when she visits you. I’ll be sure to do so.”

AJ said, his tone a veiled warning. Liam pretended to be delighted, while Ashley spoke with Juliette, telling her that she valued their friendship. Juliette returned the sentiment warmly in her thick French accent, or at least AJ interpreted it that way. Then, for a brief moment, the Dead Thing looked his way again. AJ towered over her, but his did his best not to glower.

He’d much prefer it if she didn’t try to shake his hand. He didn’t think he’d have the restraint he managed with Liam. He didn’t even really want to speak with her, but he’d make himself be polite if he had to. Juliette said nothing, offered nothing. Zach interrupted them all, and became AJ’s favorite man in the world at that point.

Zach: Well, Bretta, Juliette, Liam. I’m looking forward to getting to know you all better in the coming days. Please don’t feel obligated to throw me a party, I think we are all partied out, yes?

They were all gathering near the main entrance to the mansion to say farewell to their European guests, as well as the others that would be leaving them. She made her goodbye to Bretta, then stood with Liam and Juliette to say her farewells to them. She knew AJ was with her, but she hadn't acknowledged him since she had put her hand into the fire.

Juliette and Liam echoed her own regrets that they had to leave, and her wishes that they would see each other again soon.

Liam: You’ll certainly be missed in return. Has anyone ever told you how beautiful your eyes are?

AJ: “I have.”

She cleared her throat, glancing in AJ's direction, his stormy countenance radiating volumes, before smiling graciously at Liam, a hand moving modestly to her chest.

"How kind of you to say, though I fear they would always take second place in present company."

Liam acknowledged AJ then, and Ashley was both happy and proud that it was as an equal, or as much so as was possible.

Liam: Of course. It was nice to meet you as well, sir.

The men shook hands, and though it could not be considered warm, it was a start. And showed incredible diplomacy on Liam's part, which didn't escape Ashley's notice.

AJ: “Thank you for inviting me to join My Queen when she visits you. I’ll be sure to do so.”

It was best not to tempt fate, so she turned to say her last goodbyes to Juliette, smoothing over any unpleasantness from the morning. It was then that Zach approached them, charming as always.

Zach: Well, Bretta, Juliette, Liam. I’m looking forward to getting to know you all better in the coming days. Please don’t feel obligated to throw me a party, I think we are all partied out, yes?

"What he means is that you should absolutely embarrass him with a party."

She crossed the steps between them, and put her hands on his chest, pretending to smooth his shirt.

"Would serve you right, leaving us like this."

She felt an unexpected sadness well within her, at the realization that Zach was really going. She smiled, which was only a little forced. She turned to the others, still smiling.

"If you'll pardon us for a minute, I'd like to give your new King a bit of advice."

She put a hand on Zach's arm and led him a little off to the side. Of course, it would do very little to prevent most of them from hearing their conversation, but Ashley was long used to a lack of privacy. There were things that needed to be said.

"Before you go, I wanted to thank you for what you did for me, for us, at Arklay. And for everything else. For...before."

She reached out and wrapped her arms around him in a hug, her eyes closing. They opened again as she pulled back to look into his face. Her eyes were teary, and emotion was seeping into her voice.

"You don't have to do this, you know. This is your home. And it always will be."
