Alternate Universe: The Runaways

Brenda strolled up, not at ALL looking like she'd just narrowly survived death, in a royal blue cocktail dress, Rich in tow. He looked equally as polished. Brenda stopped Olivia's attempt to pay for her drink midway, looking around at the three who'd been congregating at the bar.

"Have you guys been paying for your drinks?? [shaking her head, then glancing at the bartender] Put them on my tab, Jay, and send a Tequila Sunrise out to me, please."

She says, and then ushers her new friends off to their booth as the lighting in the club begins to dim. They take their seats. Brenda had wanted to have enough time to tell them about Shade's attack but it would have to wait. The show was starting, and it would be in dreadfully poor taste to talk their way through it, even IF her companions were praying for a distraction.

The show itself was as classy and well performed as was expected of Dominique. Unlike the others, Brenda enjoyed the show, but then, Brenda had been raised to appreciate Dominique's music. It wasn't her favorite music or anything, but it was certainly very good, in her opinion. Dominique ended with a tribute to Nicolas King, Melrose Place's OTHER resident telepath. Brenda didn't know him very well; he wasn't usually home when she came over. As Dominique went offstage, Brenda turned to her group. They still had a few minute before they'd have to head across the lobby to the restaurant.

"So, Rich and I have some very exciting news to share--"

She started, but then stopped abruptly, as a blonde, well dressed couple was making their way over to say hi. Vincent stooped to kiss his daughter on the cheek. Marilyn outstretched a hand, which Brenda took for a moment, a reserved embrace.

Vincent Castle: Hey Honey, I see you made it after all.

Marilyn Castle: [with a smile] And you brought friends.

"Yes, this is [gesturing] Richard, Elizabeth, Olivia and Jackson. Everyone, these are my parents."

As they reached their corner booth, the show began. Although it wasn't necessarily his type of music he could not deny Dominique's raw talent. Jackson loved music so much that if he could breathe it instead of air he would, and he had to admit, she put on one heck of a classy show. He especially liked "Elemental" and was trying to remember a few of the lyrics so that he could go home and download it. She impressed him to say the least.

The music was perfectly arranged and in synch with Dominique's voice as she went in for the finale, a tribute to Nicolas King, her nephew as well as a member of the late Six. He didn't really know Nicolas at all, but he had gathered from Delilah that the two didn't really get along. As the show closed, Jackson stood up and clapped for the songstress as people began to chatter and comment on the performance. The others were talking amongst themselves when Brenda spoke.

Brenda: So, Rich and I have some very exciting news to share--

She didn't get a chance to finish as her parents made their way over to their daughter. They were beautiful, just like Brenda. The father strong and tall, and her mother obvioiusly a wasp. They seemed to be blithely unaware of Brenda's life beyond the gates of their estate which was either a blatent lack of concern or Brenda working her "magic" on them. Either way, Jackson flashed a smile and extended a handshake to Vincent and Marilyn.

"Nice to meet both of you. I'm Jackson. I think you've played a game or two of squash with my parents, Hank and Claire Elliot, from Tinseltown Studios. Either way, you both look very familiar, and Mrs. Castle, you look absolutely breathtaking."

He may have been a broody poet, but he was a Los Angelan as well and a master of keeping up appearances as well as spewing forthe bullshit and passing it off as cordial conversation. In short, Jackson was very good with parents. They loved him.

Back of the Lounge...

He watched as they gathered together and took their place in a corner booth. There they all were ripe for the picking. But now was not the time. Tonight they had gathered to see Dominique Deveraux, hoping she could give them the information they so desperately wanted about Selene. The whole situation was rather futile. She may have been able to give them a little bit of insight about her past, but even she had no real idea of what Selene was capable of. What her "thirst" was all about. Though he knew Selene better than most could ever dare to, even he was never really sure of her motives. Selene was more than just a threat to these kids. He enlisted her because he knew her hunger would be satiated with them. As long as she gathered a few of them for him, he would let her CONSUME the rest. He just hoped Selene hadn't decided to get greedy.

Gabriel Finn watched them from a distance, surveying their faces as he took a drink, savoring the cold liquid as it slid down his throat. First there was Brenda Castle. She was one of the more promising prospects, though would likely be one of the hardest to sway. She was strong and fine tuned and he suspected that she had already been training her powers. He could see her as a great asset to MysTech, someone who could even rival Diana in terms of abilities if trained correctly, which was more than enough reason for him to to want her. Then there was Elizabeth Stone, or Effy as she liked to be told. She was tough and street smart, but her offensive power was somewhat lackluster. Once he had her, he planned on manipulating her deep seeded need for family and a form of purpose. She may have been strong willed, but she was a young and impestuous girl, and he was sure that he could exploit the emotions she so desperately tried to hide. With her potential, MysTech might actually have a chance to rebuild what they once had. She would be able to infiltrate entire intelligence systems, databases, servers, etc. and with a speed much greater than any super computer. She was a high priority on his list.

He glanced at the seemingly bewildered Jackson Elliot. He showed quite some promise. With the right amount of experimentation, surgery and further augmentation of his abilities, Finn could see him as the future's answer to the Super Soldier or Master Mold. Jackson Elliott had the sheer strength the company would need in order to reclaim their spot as a global organization of power and influence. Even if they didn't end up using him, he could be rent him out to the highest bidder. Moving his eyes from Jackson, he fell on the visage of Olivia Davis, and he smiled. She was reminiscent of the late and great Blackout. They would test her to her limits, and if she lived, she would be put on the roster. After watching what she was capable during their first encounter with Selene, he wanted to see how much further she could go. Yes, Olivia could prove quite beneficial, and lastly he looked over at Richard Martin. He had already caused them problems before, almost closing down a research facility in South Carolina because of his curiosity. He was capable of great things, though he was almost sure that many members of the Inner Circle would find him too powerful. Unfortunately for Richard, he would most likely be terminated. If he was lucky, Selene might take pity on him and train him for awhile before consuming him herself.

Yes, they all had purpose, they had all promise, and hopefully he would have them all. Hopefully, his "Burn Notice" would be repealed, and he could get the hell out of this damn business once and for all. He just had to pull off the next few days without a hitch. Soon, he would have to play his part for the children, pretending he could get them into MysTech to destroy it, lure them to "The Basement" with Selene, and then capture the ones who lived through the final encounter with Shade, where they would be at their weakest and most vulnerable. They would scream, they would cry out, and though he might have the slightest bit of remorse for them, he would hand deliver them to his bosses without another thought. It wasn't for him to decide right and wrong anymore, it was for him to complete his job and get the hell out.

Dominique took the stage as the lights went dim, and Gabriel took that as his cue to silently exit the lounge. He had heard the chartreusse many a times before and while he enjoyed her voice, he had things to do. Things to prepare. He left as silently and smoothly as he had entered. None of the children would detect anything, his mind incredibly strong after his many years with MysTech, his movements fluid and exact. He was off to meet Selene. Tonight he would make his grand appearance to these "runaways", and they would fall for every word he spoke.

Rich could get used to this. He awoke with a great view of Brenda's ass as she called for a driver to pick them up. He stood slowly while trying to pretend that he hadn't been looking. It was tough to be around a pretty telepath, but he supposed that she had "heard" worse, and so he playe dit off and kept it moving.

Brenda was right of course, they had no time for the romance, at least not now, and all the distraction was not his style in any case. So he followed along all day while she picked out a slamming Black ensemble for him and paid for it without a second though. As they walked into the bar, he felt like a million bucks considering he had nearly died just a few hours earlier.

As Brenda spoke to the bartender and received her order, Richard ordered a screwdriver and sat with the others as the show began. Dominique was absolutely AMAZING! Her voice was clear as a a bell and she looked stunning for someone who was old enough to have a nephew older than Richard was. :) He soaked in the performance and noted the tribute to Nicolas King, his hidden benefactor since he arrived at Delilah's foundation.

After Isis' standing ovation, Brenda's parents made their way over and the motley crew was introduced. Jackson made small talk and was chatty and charming. Rich had his own approach, which was much more...subdued, yet equally effective with parents.

Sir...Ma'am...Nice to meet you both.

Firm handshake with eye contact? Check.

Respectful address? Check.

Megawatt smile? Check.

Parents impressed? Of COURSE.

Everyone headed over to the corner booth and Olivia took her seat. Half her Long Island iced tea was already gone in preperation for Dominique's performance. Looking up at the waiter specifically on call for them, she lifted her glass indicating she wanted another one. He nodded and headed over to the bar as the lights dimmed and Dominique made her way onto the stage. She began to sing, and though it was undeniable that her voice was very good, Olivia was bored out of her mind. This was definitely not her type of music. Why couldn't Rich's super powered friend be Beyonce or Alicia Keys or something?

An hour seemed like an eternity, but finally Dominique's show was over. Jackson, Rich, and Brenda all errupted into applause, along with the rest of the lounge. Clapping a few times, Olivia was far more egar to get down to buisness with this woman than to build her ego. But soon the applause settled to chatter among the guests. This finally allowed the group to talk buisness.

Brenda: "So, Rich and I have some very exciting news to share--"

But before Brenda could share their news, an attractive and very well dressed couple called Brenda's name while making their way toward their booth. It was Brenda's parents. Giving them both a polite smile, Olivia's eyes shifted onto the mother. God she looks familiar.... Well duh...she was a billionaire, of course she looked familiar. Olivia must have seen her in the newspapers or gossip websites. But as Jackson greeted Marilyn with a gentlemanly handshake, Olivia's eyes widdened. Oh shit.. Brenda's mom was the woman she jacked at The Grove the day before! She would recognize that 5 karat canary yellow diamond ring ANYWHERE. Hell, if it wasn't sautered onto the woman's hand, Olivia would have taken THAT too. :p Then it dawned on her, Brenda was probably reading her thoughts right now. Fuck.

Smiling at both Vincent and Marylin, it was her turn to say a greeting.

"Nice to meet you, i'm Olivia.."

In her mind she was a little frazzled, but on the exterior she was as cool as a cucumber. Although it didn't help that Brenda was probably boring a hole in her head at the moment. Glancing over at the blonde, Olivia gave her a guilty 'sorry' smile, hoping she realized she didn't mean to steal from her mother...it just was a weird coincidence. Although Olivia still really wanted that canary yellow diamond ring......Kidding kidding!...well, sorta... :D

[ the evening progressed nicely, and guests casually flowed from the lounge into the posh lobby and to the restaurant. it was another fine evening for the hotel and Dominique continued to remind her fans and other guests why she was well worth her reputation. even some of her most incredulous critics, the youngest among the crowd this evening, seemed to at least APPRECIATE her talent. Of course you generally wouldnt find anyone under 25 rushing to the stores to buy her records unless they had been raised to appreciate her music.]

[ the elevator dings and as the doors open, Dominique emerges, fresh faced and looking different with her hair down and in another outfit. She moves through the lobby subtlely nodding to those who greeted her, and greeting others as she moved quitely and gracefully through the lobby area. ]

I expected Richard...and possibly Brenda...but these other children? I should have specified to Richard that my calling card was extended to HIM and HIM ALONE. But it would be unkind of me to not at least hear them out in their time of need.

[ the sound system is playing some smooth jazz, the perfect sound for the atmosphere of the evening.]

Voice: Dominique!

[ Dominique's eyebrows lift slightly at the sound of someone calling her name with such a familiar tone and as she turns to the direction it came from, she sees Marilyn and Vincent Castle, two long time fans and personal friends of the songstress. Her normally stern expression softens into a smile of warmth as she comes closer to them.]

[ Dominique was ALMOST as tall as Vincent but he still edged her out in height even with her heels on. and Marilyn had an angelic face. it was obvious that Brenda came from good gene stock. ]

Vincent, Marilyn....good evening.

[ She greets them with her clear elegant voice before returning Vincent's embrace and then Marilyn's as well with an air kiss.]

It's always a pleasure to see you both!

[ Brenda's parents were here...not that Dominique had a PROBLEM with it. Far from it. It was always nice to see friendly faces and loyal fans. But If Brenda was in the company of Richard and these other children...she was playing it DANGEROUSLY close. Still, Dominique knew that the Castles would not know who SHE was going to dine with this evening.]

Oh...my...GOD. The assault on Effy's ears was painful. She had to switch to whiskey just to dull the PAIN. She looked around at the crowd. People were such sheep. Listened to whoever the media TOLD them they should. Pay $500 a seat for CRAP just to say they did. PLEASE.

She rested her head on her hand, hoping the show couldn't go on too much longer. This was such a waste of time. Rich better be right about this chick, or Effy was going to TK him into the ocean. He could BET on that.

Then, as if the evening couldn't get worse, Brenda's PARENTS showed up. Everyone appropriately kissed their rich asses. When Brenda said her name, Effy waved. She wasn't there to impress anybody. The corner of her mouth did, however, turn up into a smile as she thought of how much the clearly alcoholic drinks in front of them would ruffle the Castles' feathers.

After what seemed like ages, Dominique showed up. What was she doing, getting Botox injections backstage? Now at last they could get down to business. She looked pointedly at Brenda and thought to her.

You need to get rid of your parents.

Jackson had the art of parental smarm on lock. Rich and Olivia were respectfully pleasant, and they were all lucky that Effy just waved instead of calling the barkeep over for more whiskey. As it was, Brenda's parents didn't seem to notice the assortment of Highball glasses around the table of teens, or if they did, they didn't think twice.

Vincent: Ah yes, Hank Elliot. The man's got a serve that kills me.

And a secretary that's going to kill his marriage…

Brenda's father thought, but while he did, her mother's mind also drifted the the infidelity between the Elliots, and she knew it was happening on both sides. Jackson complimented Marilyn and she smiled gracefully, waving her hand as if to discourage him, but she was charmed.

Olivia recognized Marilyn from…. When she MUGGED her?! Brenda's gazed snapped to Olivia, who was admiring Brenda's mother's ring and wishing she had been able to snag that too. Brenda almost KICKED Olivia under the table, but Olivia quickly looked over and felt guilty. Brenda sternly gazed at Livvie and then huffed, forgiving her. It wasn't an intentional slight on Olivia's part, and Brenda understood that not everyone was born with bottomless bank accounts and Black credit cards. Some people had to fight for their right to live comfortably, and for Olivia that meant a life of crime. You had to do what you had to do. Just so long as Olivia didn't do it to Brenda's mother again, she wouldn't get a psychic nail in the head. ;) The thought crossed Olivia's mind that she still wanted the diamond ring and Brenda's eyes flashed at her, but then Olivia mentally admitted she was just kidding and Brenda playfully rolled her eyes.

Effy: [in thought] You need to get rid of your parents.

Brenda nodded subtly, and saw a smooth opportunity, as her parents were already thinking of moving on; they wanted to greet Dominique and congratulate her on the show. Brenda's father had glanced over and seen a friend of his and gave a polite nod of acknowledgement to the distant party.

"Alright, well, the gang and I are going to dinner now…"

Marilyn: Of course. It was nice meeting you all.

Vincent: Yes, nice to meet you kids. Jackson, tell your father hello for me, and that I'll be calling to setup a rematch soon. [glancing at his daughter adoringly] Goodnight Honey. [to his wife] We'd better get out of here before the mayor spots us. His wife is with him tonight. You KNOW how she just talks and talks.

Brenda bid them goodnight and slid out of the booth, draining the last of her drink. The waiter that had been bringing refills throughout the show stopped by to see if they needed anything else, but Brenda shook her head, thanked him and quietly told him to charge the tip on their house account. He nodded and drifted off, Brenda led the group in a beeline out of the club, across the lobby, and into Dakota. The maitre d saw them coming and escorted them to a secluded table for six, where Dominique would also be brought once she made it through the lobby.

"So, like I was saying… Rich and I ran had ANOTHER encounter with that wacko shadow woman-- it turns out her name or whatever is Shade. She tried to recruit us... And then she tried to kill us. [sarcastically] What did YOU guys do with your free afternoon?"

****

Meanwhile, Brenda's parents were running into an old friend.

Marilyn: "Dominique!"

Warm embraces are had by all. Neither Marilyn nor Vincent seemed aware that Dominique was on her way to have dinner with their daughter, they were just genuinely happy to see their favorite chanteuse and occasional business associate.

Dominique: Vincent, Marilyn, good evening. It's always a pleasure to see you both!

Vincent: "The pleasure is all OURS, Dominique. You look as stunning as ever. And Congratulations, it was a SUPERB show tonight, with a very tasteful tribute to your nephew. Our condolences for your loss."

Marilyn: [compassionately] "Oh yes, what a terrible tragedy. He was too young. I hope you're holding up all right."

Oh thank you BOTH. I do enjoy performing here. As you know this was the hotel I used to debut my act to my american audience over 20 years ago and it prooved to be a sound move so this place will always have special meaning to me.

[ Dominique replies with a warm but slightly distant tone. they were perceptive in noting her tribute to Nicolas and wondering how she was doing. But ever the professional, Dominique kept it together on the surface but below...was the pain of loss....not merely because of Nicolas, though that did sadden her heart...but even more so because she lost the last part of her SISTER that she'd lost SO long ago. Her sister's death and Nicolas' revelation were traumas that remained constant in Dominique ACROSS timelines.]

[ when Vincent and Marilyn speak on Nicolas, Dominique looks down for a moment. only those CLOSEST to her got to see those rare moments of human emotion. The Castles had become some of Dominique's trusted business associates and friends...outside of just being among her wealthiest and most loyal fans and so they saw the Chanteuse's softer side when few others did.]

...well it hasn't been easy, but thank you for asking. taking time to travel again and perform gives me a welcomed distraction...keeps me busy. that and some other business affairs that require me to travel from New York to Los Angeles. Of course performining here with friends such as YOURSELVES in the audiences plays a big part in my coping with the loss and I thank you for your continued support.

My compliments again on the hotel. Excellent accomodations as always. I can't imagine having a suite anywhere else.

[ She smiles at them both.]

I must be on my way, i have a dinner meeting to attend...but do call on me again soon. I'd love to lunch with you both while I'm in town and Marilyn...its nearly time for us to indulge in one of our shopping sprees is it not?

[ winking at her, the two had been known to clear out a boutique and keep it on lock while they had their pick of the best of the best.]

[ one last embrace for each of them and a fond farwell for the evening, and Dominique went her way while the Castles went theirs. She moved along, smiling or nodding at a few patrons who waved or smiled at her. she soon found the secluded seating arrangement for herself and the children. How CLEVER of Brenda to ensure the seat at the head of the table was reserved for Dominique ;) and as she drew near, she took note of each child present.]

[ she could almost guess who among them was posessed of some culture and class while who else was hardly refined. She had no time for games.
still, she'd let THEM either dig a hole for themselves or foster a respectfull and ultimately beneficial relationship with her. Richard said he needed her help and so...she was here to hopefully give him that help without the interference or INSOLENCE of his little friends.]

Good evening, Richard, Brenda!

[ she looked knowingly at Brenda. the young woman had subtlely ensured that her path would not cross with her parents as they dined here this evening and Dominique knew that Brenda was a mutant just as Richard and everyone at the table was.]

and who are your companions?

Thank you, Richard.

[ She said as she nodded to him after he stood up and pulled out her seat for her. she couldnt HELP but think of Nicolas but she would not net her personal feelings show. THANKFULLY Brenda could not pierce her psi screen but she probably could sense the EMOTIONS.]

As the sorceress walked over, Richard's manners went into autopilot.

Rich was no angel. But his mother was a Black Southern debutante...she was well versed in manners and what should do, and so she made sure those ideas were hammered into Richard. So doors were opene, "sir" and "ma'am" was said, he knew how to use ALL of the silverware at a table, and when a woman approaches a table, he stands.

Thank you, Richard.

Richard nodded silently, smiling as he seated himself again. She asked for his friends names and he obliged.

You are already familiar with Brenda Castle. This is Elizabeth Stone, Jackson Elliot, and Olivia Davis.

Richard was unsure how to proceed further, so he fell silent. He thought that perhaps they should all get to know each other before speaking of Shade.

Finally Brenda's parents left. They seemed like relatively nice people, but they're timing really sucked. Once they were out of listening range, Brenda proceeded to explain that she and Rich had another encounter with the shadow woman. Her name was Shade. How corny.. Olivia said in her head as she took another swig of her Long Island Iced Tea.

Everyone soon headed to dinner to meet with Dominique. Taking a seat at the table, a plate and several different forks, spoons, and a knives accomponied it. What the hell was this? Did people really need 7 different utensils to eat with? Seriously? Looking a little perplexed, she came from an middle class family in southern California. She knew it wasn't appropriate to talk with food in your mouth. She knew always to put the napkin in your lap. And of course she knew to say her 'pleases' and 'thank yous'. But this upper class dining was a little crazy. Ugh, fuck it. She'd just go from littlest to biggest. That seemed logical.

Dominique: Good evening, Richard, Brenda!

Looking up, Olivia still didn't quite know what to make of Dominique. Despite her being friends with both Brenda and Jackson's parents, and knowing Rich AND being related to a former member of the Six [Nicolas], something about her just screamed opportunistic bitch.

Rich: You are already familiar with Brenda Castle. This is Elizabeth Stone, Jackson Elliot, and Olivia Davis.

Once her name was announced by Rich, Olivia gave a faint smile before glancing over at Brenda. Olivia was curious if she could read Dominique's thoughts.

Bren....are you getting anything from her?

Brenda was smart enough to know not to draw attention to herself when answering. A simple shake or nod of the head would ease Olivia's curiosity.

Dominique: …well it hasn't been easy, but thank you for asking. taking time to travel again and perform gives me a welcomed distraction...keeps me busy. that and some other business affairs that require me to travel from New York to Los Angeles. Of course performing here with friends such as YOURSELVES in the audiences plays a big part in my coping with the loss and I thank you for your continued support.

Vincent nodded with concern and Marilyn offered a gentle, understanding smile.

Marilyn: "You don't have to go through it alone, Dominique. If there's anything you need, ANYTHING at all, you let us know."

Dominique: My compliments again on the hotel. Excellent accomodations as always. I can't imagine having a suite anywhere else.

Vincent: "Well thank you. We are rather proud of it ourselves. Like you mentioned, it houses a lot of history for a lot of people. And of course, you are always welcome here."

Dominique: I must be on my way, i have a dinner meeting to attend...but do call on me again soon. I'd love to lunch with you both while I'm in town and Marilyn...its nearly time for us to indulge in one of our shopping sprees is it not?

Marilyn: "I believe it IS, but don't let us keep you. We can make plans later."

Vincent: "Yes, enjoy your dinner, Dominique, and take care of yourself."

***

Olivia was less than surprised about attack number two. Nobody got a chance to ask any questions, though, as Dominique approached. Brenda had met the woman on several occasions before, but this would be the first time since receiving her powers. She was interested in knowing what Dominique was like mentally. She suspected that she'd be just as classy and intelligent as she acted outwardly, but sometimes people weren't.

Dominique: Good evening, Richard, Brenda!

Brenda smiled gracefully as Richard pulled out a chair for Dominique and introduced the rest of the group. Dominique's mind was silent, as Dr. Victoria's had been earlier today. It wasn't a shock anymore… it was just frustrating. She would have to pay more attention than she had become accustomed to, but the trust for Dominique didn't yet waiver. Olivia wondered [directly at Brenda] if Brenda was getting any extra information from Dominique. Brenda pursed her lips and subtly indicated no, then subliminally suggested to Olivia [and Effy, who probably wouldn't care] that she should use her silverware starting on the outside and working her way in. Rich wasn't sure quite how to proceed. Brenda took the initiative.

"Good evening Miss Deveraux. Thank you for agreeing to meet with us on such short notice. I'm sure there are other things you could be doing right now."

So after Brenda's parents and Dominique did that whole fake, "Kiss kiss, I'll call you and we'll do lunch" bullshit, they finally were able to get down to it. She wanted to ask Brenda more about what had happened with Shade, but she wasn't that comfortable with Dominique now at the table with them, not yet anyway. Rich went around the table and introduced them all.

"Effy."

She corrected him.

Brenda mentally instructed her on the usage of her silverware. Her eyes narrowed.

If you were so concerned with how I use eating utensils, you should have picked McDonald's.

Brenda predictably began by kissing Dominique's butt.

Brenda Castle said:
"Good evening Miss Deveraux. Thank you for agreeing to meet with us on such short notice. I'm sure there are other things you could be doing right now."

Effy broke in.

"Truth is, Rich was very insistent that we contact you. He seems to think you can help. Me, I'm not so sure, but here's the bullet point version. MysTech is recruiting people like us - and you know what I mean - for their own agenda, and those who refuse to be recruited are terminated. We aim to take them down before they can get to us. Karen Victoria told us you had...intimate knowledge of MysTech...and no love for them."

at dinner

The staff QUICKLY and efficiently attended their table, especially with Dominique sitting there. She nodded for her goblet of champagne to be filled.

Brenda said:
"Good evening Miss Deveraux. Thank you for agreeing to meet with us on such short notice. I'm sure there are other things you could be doing right now."

as Brenda greeted her, Dominique noticed Olivia starring at the utensiles. It was like watching a barbarian discover fire.

They were ALL young and of course with youth comes immaturity and lack of experience. anyone could understand that. TOLERATING it was another thing all together.

"It's quite alright Brenda. Things have a way of working out the way the should. I had business to attend to on the west coast and after Richard's urgent phone call..."

Effy said:

then there was Elizebeth...oh pardon..."Effy", who looked like something from a documentary about wayward school girls who ended up in the roller derby. Her dress looked like a trashcan replica from Marshall's and her attitude matched.

she took a moment to cast a disdainfull glare at Effy, indicating to Brenda and Richard that there was already ONE person among them who was not making a good impression. THEY may tolerate Effy's insolence but Dominique would not. She returned her attention to Brenda and Richard, refusing to address Effy straight out for the moment. How dare she interrupt? Did she really think that she and this group of inexperienced UPSTARTS had a chance in HELL of "taking down" Mystech? the HELLFIRE CLUB was now a sworn enemy of Mystech and even despite the power, experience and connections that the White, Red and Black Queens had, THEY did not regard Mystech lightly.

"...AFTER Richard's urgent phone call, and some checking on my own, I decided that I should meet you here."

she spoke with a sharp elegance in her tone.

that CHILD was not going to dictate the tone of this meeting. Dominique wouldnt have it. If Effy didnt like it, she could LEAVE. everything that Dominique had read on her indicated she was VERY STUNTED socially. Still, she mentioned that SHADOW WEAVER of all people had referred them to her? She hadnt seen THAT woman since the funerals of Nicolas and other membrs of the Six. The two of them had never been "friends" but in the aftermath of the Six's death, they had become quiet associates. if KAREN had sent them Dominique's way, then Richard was quite right in contacting her.

taking a moment to enjoy some of her food. if they were goint to take her time, then she'd make SURE to enjoy the cuisine.

"I am many things. a Phone book or an "at a glance" is NOT one of them. I am not a one stop shop for information, child."

KAREN might have been one to help them in other circumstances, but outside of Richard and Brenda, Dominique had NO qualms about casting all of them out on the spot.

If they wanted her help there was a much better way of getting it. Dominique appreciated people with manners and respect. Something that "Kids today" didnt seem to get. She wasnt about to cater to the whims of children who had no regard or respect. If they wanted her help, then Richard and Brenda would clearly have to be the ones to handle the conversation with her.

Dominique was very well connected AND informed both here and overseas...not only as the BLACK QUEEN of the Hellfire Club but on her own standing as ISIS. If Effy wanted to underestimate her, that was her choice. Dominique wouldnt be burdened by it either way, but she WOULD take the opportunity to minimize the girl. It was obvious to Brenda and Richard that Effy was rubbing Dominique the wrong way.

Great. Effy decided NOW was the time to play the after-school kid role. Richard shot her a quick look...he understood the importance of this meeting and he had a feeling...something told him this was not the time to fuck up. He completed his introductions just as Brenda took over seamlessly.

Brenda was handling things pretty good it seemed, respectful but at the same time a perfect setup to talk about what was going on. Maybe this would go off...

SHIT. Effy started in and he KNEW it was a no-go. Her tone, her attitude, even likely her outfit was not working with Dominique and Rich could see it as surely as if he were reading her mind. He stiffened slightly and shot Effy another look before returning to Dominique's gaze as she spoke.

"I am many things. a Phone book or an "at a glance" is NOT one of them. I am not a one stop shop for information, child."

Richard inwardly winced as he tried to retake control of the conversation.

I apologize Ms. Devereaux...everyone here is not as...familiar with you as myself and Brenda. I appreciate you being willing to speak with us. I was hoping that we could enjoy dinner a bit before we spoke of the issue at hand. That does not seem to be the case.

This morning, we were attacked by a woman, a sorceress who uses shadows...her name is Shade. We escaped and while Dr. Victoria was healing some of us, I had decided to call you. Dr. Victoria did speak well of you, and while I was hoping that I would not bother you so soon after meeting you, I called you and set up this meeting for tonight. Shade attacked Brenda and me later today and said that she had special plans for the two of us. We fought back and barely escaped.

To be honest ma'am, I don't know what we have gotten ourselves into. All I know is that people want to either own us or kill us...and now Shade has threatened to hurt my Mama. She is hurting enough with hearing me die at that lake when I was "changed", but if she were to be hurt AGAIN for my sake...I'd rather die fighting Shade and Mystech.

It was an impassioned plea, one delivered as the young man held the sorceress' gaze and gave her a look into his own private hell since he was dissolved in those chemical. he didn't even know if he was a mutant; Delilah thought that he was and that his mutation somehow saved him and made him what he was. But now he was just a young man with no family who wanted to do the right thing; so much like Nicolas in so many ways.

He waited for the singer's answer...

her glare of disapproval at Effy softened as Richard spoke and she returned her focus to him.

"Very well. I don't suppose it would be FAIR to hold you and Brenda responsible for the lack of tact displayed by your circumstantial companions."

Dominique enjoyed a bit more of the food before her, before taking her glass of champagne in hand. so Karen HAD come out of hiding at some point...and RECENTLY. Dominique knew the woman well both as an enemy, an ally and now as a fellow mourner, survivor and associate. if the doctor to heal them, then it was obvious they were ALREADY in over their heads and just too stupid to know it. She listened carefully as Richard spoke. Taking a moment to survey Jackson and Olivia. Olivia was distrustful, typical of a theif. She'd rather slip in and out of a situation unnoticed with a way to profit from it while Jackson was unfocused and without a purpose. She knew of his parents as well. His father was a whore and everyone on BOTH coasts knew it. ;)

Dominique observed the genuine feeling. HE came to her for help because he truly needed it. He wasnt trying to put up a false front...a cub trying to act like a tiger like some of his other companions. and Brenda....well Dominique was not SURPRISED that Brenda would be involved in "superhuman affairs", given her own special talents, but THIS group of people? Brenda would be MUCH more suited to be groomed by the White Queen, one of the world's PREMIER telepaths. Dominique was on the verge of offering Brenda's parents a sponsored membership to the HELLFIRE CLUB. They MORE than met the financial requirements and with the Hellfire Club, the WORLD would more than be at their disposal, so with Brenda, Dominique couldnt HELP but have an interest in keeping the child SAFE. Her parents were fans...FRIENDS.

"Calm yourself. You will do NO good to your mother if you DIE after giving into your emotional impulses."

"Dr. Victoria and I have a long past. There is an unspoken trust and respect between us now...we have much in common, most especially the pain of LOSS (her daughter, my nephew.). We know about Mystech...and outside she, myself along with my colleagues in the Hellfire Club...there really isnt anyone else LEFT with the power to stand up to them. "

"But because of who you are...ALL of you...this is your reality. There are those who would see you captured and held as "posessions" and those who would see you DEAD. Whatever Delilah told you...THIS is the reality of the situation. You won't be able to change that and your would be protector is GONE, leaving you to face something you are not ready for.

All you can hope to do as ADAPT and that means establishing connections of YOUR OWN with those who are best able to help you."

"I HIGHLY doubt that Shade's motivation for attacking you has anything to do with Mystech. Shade is...a member of the HELLFIRE CLUB and WE do NOT do business with Mystech. We are in fact sworn ENEMIES of Mystech. Shade was...at one time a member of MY personal Black Court in the Hellfire Club. Myself and two other women comprise the INNER CIRCLE which CONTROLS the Hellfire Club and all of its branches across the globe. Shade was removed from her position in the INNER CIRCLE after a VIOLENT confrontation with my colleague, Diana. But she retains her membership to the club itself and I can tell you that we are NOT in the business of harvesting children..."

especially ungroomed wheat grass like "EFFY"

The Hellfire Club. ONLY Brenda had heard stories about this super elite, super secret gathering of the world's most rich and powerfull. Glamor, excess and power were the name of the game. dark deals made behind closed doors that affected everything from politics to entertainment. They rivaled Mystech in terms of their reach but their goal was FAR different. They were not about the business of obscene biological experiments or even MURDERING "innocent" people and despite how SOME might view the Hellfire Club...they were still legal (in the loosest but still true sense of the world) where as Mystech was a company driven by malefience . Brenda had no idea how close Dominique was to offering membership to her family...which would extend (among other things) PROTECTION.

"If Mystech is after you... It would make no sense for them to try to use SHADE to capture you for then she AND Mystech would risk direct conflict with the Hellfire Club and I have learned that NO ONE controlls Shade and most who try end up DYING BUT at the same time, Shade has NO solid support from the INNER CIRCLE. Not anymore."

Effy--always miss popularity--cut Brenda off and addressed Dominique herself. Olivia had to hold back a smirk because honestly, this woman was so into herself and her "power" that it was pretty damn funny that Effy was going toe to toe with her. However, Dominique dismissed her immediately. Picking at her food as Rich tried to smooth things over with the singer, Olivia put her fork down. As Dominique began to describe how she knew Shade and how she was apart of the Hellfire Club, Olivia immediately lost her appitite.

"Wait a minute....so you're telling me that Shade is apart of this Hellfire Club? The same club that YOU'RE apart of? This woman tried to kill us, TWICE. And she was apart of the same "court" that you supposedly rule over and you can't give us anymore information other than 'She's dangerous and would never work for MysTech?'"

Shaking her head, Olivia KNEW this woman wasn't trustworthy. And frankly, she was about as vague with her information as Doctor Victoria was. So far she revealed that Shade was apart of an elite club, that she only works for herself, and that she wouldn't work for MysTech, according to Dominique. This was bullshit.

Dominique: "But she retains her membership to the club itself and I can tell you that we are NOT in the business of harvesting children..."

[rolling her eyes] "Yeah, tell that to Brenda and Rich who were nearly killed by her a couple hours ago."

"Look, I know we're just a bunch of kids to you. And Lord knows you've made it blindingly obvious that you think the three of US [Jackson, Effy, and herself] are a waste of your precious time. But this chick wants us DEAD. Whether she's working for MysTech or not, she's a problem for US. And quite frankly, if she IS working for MysTech, she sounds like she would be a problem for YOU and your "Inner Circle" too. If we [gesturing to the group] aren't strong enough to fight Shade and she delivers us to MysTech, that means the company is one step closer to reviving. And THAT, Ms. Devereaux, directly affects YOU."

Needless to say, Olivia wasn't getting on Dominique's Christmas card list.

"I don't care if you think i'm a mouthy brat. I value my life, and I don't want to die at the hands of this psychopathic shadow woman because everyone we try to get help from ends up treating us like we're nothing more than kids, and turns their noses up at us. OUR lives are at risk. WE'RE being hunted. And we have a right to know what we're up against."

[to Brenda] "I'm done with this woman. She's only out for herself and her stupid little club. She's NOT going to help us."

Olivia's temper finally reared it's ugly little head again. But she was fighting on behalf of the group--HER group. They were all in the same situation. All of their lives were at risk. And if the others didn't understand that, then she would apologize to them later.

Effy: [in thought] If you were so concerned with how I use eating utensils, you should have picked McDonald's.

Brenda pursed her lips, looking down at her amuse-bouche, replying silently with a small shrug of her shoulders as she picked up her fork. She was only trying to help. Effy, not content in gently sidling up to the subject, launched straight into business. She was a straight shooter, and that COULD be a good thing… but cutting in the way she did wasn't going to go over well. Brenda had the ability to STOP the words coming out of Effy's mouth, but she didn't like to use her power so brazenly. It felt rude to override people's natural responses when it wasn't a life-or-death situation, and if she started controlling everyone and everything that happened, when would she STOP? Delilah had rubbed off on her at least that much. She chewed thoughtfully as Dominique forcefully continued responding to Brenda after Effy finished with her interjection.

Dominique:...AFTER Richard's urgent phone call, and some checking on my own, I decided that I should meet you here.

"Well, we ALL appreciate it, even if we don't all make that obvious."

Dominique: I am many things. A phone book or an 'at a glance' is NOT one of them. I am not a one stop shop for information, child.

"No, of COURSE not. NONE of us think that. It's just that… we're overwhelmed. Honestly, I think we're in WAY over our heads. Everyday, every HOUR it seems, has become a fight for our lives, and we're desperate for answers. And everyone… we've come to rely on, everyone we WOULD have asked is gone."

Richard apologizes and appeals to Dominique as well, and thankfully she is still open to their predicament. Dominique gave them a little background information, mentioning the Hellfire Club. Brenda knew of it. In her circles, the Club was revered as the most elite circle in the WORLD. You did not seek it out, it found YOU if it deemed you worthy. Her parents not-so-secretly would have liked being members. Many high profile people were rumored to be involved with the club, but of course, no one talked about it directly. It was NOT a surprise that Dominique was a part of it. Olivia was outraged, but then, her perspective of the situation was much different.

Olivia: Wait a minute....so you're telling me that Shade is apart of this Hellfire Club? The same club that YOU'RE apart of? This woman tried to kill us, TWICE. And she was apart of the same "court" that you supposedly rule over and you can't give us anymore information other than 'She's dangerous and would never work for MysTech?'

[calmly] "It's MORE than we knew BEFORE, Olivia."

But Olivia was on a roll. Someone needed to explain to these girls that one could attract more flies with honey than vinegar. Olivia passionately pleaded their case, trying to get across to Dominique that this could become a problem for her as well. She had a strong point, but going about it the way she did… was less tactful than it could have been.

Olivia: [in thought] I'm done with this woman. She's only out for herself and her stupid little club. She's NOT going to help us.

Well she MIGHT help us if we played our cards right! Brenda wanted to shoot back, to SEAR into both Olivia and Effy's brains, but she contained her frustration. BARELY. It was getting harder to remain calm. Effy and Olivia were all up in arms, but they didn't know the HALF of it. They'd only encountered Shade ONCE. Rich and Brenda were in a different boat, having JUST come from a second attack in which Shade PLAINLY said 'join me or die a painful, drawn out death'. They had chosen not to join her. Now they were getting a lucky break in the form of Dominique. She, with the Hellfire Club on her side, had the power to STOP Shade. Dominique could offer them protection from Mystech and to be quite honest, Brenda was NOT oblivious to the allure of the Hellfire Club, now that it had entered the realm of possibility. But Effy and Olivia were inadvertently burning a bridge that Rich and Brenda BOTH wanted desperately to cross.

[gently] "ALRIGHT, everyone. Let's just hold on a second here. I think we'd ALL benefit from taking a deep breath and a step BACK. Effy, Olivia, I KNOW where you're coming from, and I understand what you're trying to do, but to be straight, you aren't going about it the best way and you don't know EVERYTHING yet. We need all the help we can get, so rather than proving how tough and willful we are, we ought to be making sure we don't turn away a possible ally. [turning to Dominique] Mystech IS after us. Now I don't know if Shade IS working with them, or if they simply turned her on to us, or if her interests just so happen to coincide with Mystech's. But she confirmed their interest in us when she tried to recruit Rich and I earlier this evening. WHOEVER Shade is working for, whatever her reasons, somewhere along the way she decided that Rich and I would be wasted if we fell unto Mystech. We didn't capitalize on her offer to join her and we BARELY made it out with our lives. I don't think we'll be able to survive a THIRD attack. I didn't give her everything I HAD… but I won't be able to surprise her again. She's smart enough to take out the biggest threats first and without trying to sound smug, I think tonight she decided that threat was me when I managed to blindside her. You're right, we AREN'T ready for this, but I'm afraid we no longer have a choice. I personally would like to LIVE past Shade, and I don't want to join Mystech. What do you recommend we do?"

end of dinner

Dominique eyes widen for only a MOMENT as Olivia proceeds to show her class, or lack their of, behaving more like a child in preschool than a young woman with any kind of decorum.

She then returned to her previous countenance but it was obvious to HER that this meeting was OVER at least with the MAJORITY of them. Dominique had NOTHING to proove or validate to these children. she owed them NOTHING and she could understand why some of them SHOULD be killed. ;)

Olivia WAS right, Shade could and most likely was poised to pose a BIG problem for the Hellfire Club as WELL as these children. But at the same time, Dominique and the Hellfire Club (in theory) were really ALL that stood between the children and sudden, painfull annihilation, not just themselves but any of t heir families as well. But who had MORE to lose? CERTAINLY not Dominique and she wasnt ABOUT to be chastised OR checked by a petulant child who couldnt even figure out which fork to use with which course or worse yet, would probably STEAL her blind if she wasnt aware of what was going on.

"Yes. and I'm done as well."

Not needing to dignify anything ELSE the girl said, Dominique prepared to take her leave of these children, PERMANENTLY, when Brenda spoke up.

Brenda said:

Dominique had a small but DISTINCT problem. KNOWING what she knew, realizing that BRENDA was involved in this...if something happened to THIS child, who belonged to two long time fans, business associates and FRIENDS of her's, it would in no small way be on Dominique's conscience. She'd already lost NICOLAS by some wild, inexplicable turn of events that came before even SHE could attempt to control the situation.

She felt a flash of regret. WHY had she given IN to the impulse to find the boy whom Nicolas had last helped? Had she not been so CAUGHT UP in trying to explore whatever REMOTE connections were left to her nephew's memory, she might not be here now!

BUT, just as Nicolas had needed her, his only living relative in the world, so too did the child of her friends...and this boy who was all she had left of Nicolas' legacy. If helping them benefited their wretched companions, she'd have to just chalk it up to an "occupational hazard" of sorts.

She looked at Brenda, and remained composed despite it being clear she was one move away from departing them.

"Brenda, I will say this to you in front of these other children. You and Richard both. I CAN'T turn a blind eye or a deaf ear to this because YOU are involved. You are the child of two close personal friends of mine and it would be beyond unkind to let you go to your death. If I had any REAL reason to hide anything from you...I would not have disclosed the fact that Shade is a member of the Hellfire Club. So do NOT allow yourself to be paranoid like that child over there...what else can you expect from a girl who is just a step ABOVE "street urchin"?

"Richard my nephew was your benefactor. He saught to help you when no one else could or would and that is why i found you."

"What should you do now? Well for starters do NOT allow yourselves to be governed by your adolescent emotions like your friends over there. What you are facing is very unfortunate. It shouldn't be this way but it IS and so NOW you're going to have to grow up and learn how to play the game and part of that game is knowing who to turn to."

"You have asked for my help, and I will give you that help but you just be prepared to sacrifice EVERYTHING including your "normal lives" for the time being UNTIL the immediate threat of Shade has been dealt with. You're a danger to your families, those of you who live with them and you can't go back to that "Foundation". Its too obvious a place. You're going to have to find a way leave them for the next few days. You can stay here...I OWN the wing of this hotel that my suite occupies and there are several rooms available. This way you are TOGETHER and close at hand. HOW you manage that is your problem, but in order for ME to protect you, you must be here...close at hand."

looking at Richard.

"There is also access to food, communication and other necessities that will make it easier for you. You can't fight to survive if you are not up to the task physically and mentally or without proper information."

" I will contact my colleagues, Diana and Helena [ the White & Red Queen] and inform them about Shade. Her actions can be considered a grave threat to the security of the Hellfire Club and as such, will require her to be dealt with...IMMEDIATELY. As a fellow magick user, I have the power to compell her to appear before me and I will deal with her. "

standing up and preparing to take her leave.

"And finally? Keep THOSE two on a short leash. They will not win you friends OR favor with very many people."

"Return to the hotel in no less than 4 hours. That should give you each time to figure out what you need to do to be back here. Once this is over, you should be able to resume your lives as they were, free of the menace of Shade. For now, I am going to contact my colleagues and find out what ELSE is going on."

"Do not be late. I will be waiting to present you to your rooms later."

and with that, Dominique bids Richard and Brenda a good evening and takes her leave of them.

If Mystech WAS going to make any moves that some how conflicted with Hellfire Club's intersets in any given area...that would be an act of war. the Hellfire Club had several standing accounts with this hotel and with Mystech JUST reconstituting itself, there were still MANY enemies it had to consider INCLUDING the Hellfire Club. Dominique would angle this to her fellow queens that Shade was now a raving security risk to be dealt with...she would SECRETLY be urged on by her concern for Brenda and Rich, as well as the chance to perhaps find out if Shade OR Mystech had anything to do with Nicolas.

That was HER plan, and if these children wanted to live, regardless of what any one of them might have thought about HER...it was t heir best chance at not only regrouping and getting built up, but SURVIVING this nightmare.

But young people can get into an AWFULL lot of trouble even in the span of just a few hours.

It turned out that Brenda and Rich had been attacked by Shade only a few hours earlier which left a flurry of questions in Jackson's head. Why just them? And what were they doing together? But those questions were quickly pushed out of his mind as Dominique approached and they sat down for dinner.

Everything was going pretty cordial and then Effy broke in. He was sure the woman would be ticked off, but he had to admit. He didn't really trust her either, and she seemed to be a woman who took meeting them as if she were getting a shot. She had no real interest in them outside of Rich and Brenda and when push came to shove, he had a feeling she wouldn't try to help them. So he sided with Effy in this instance.

Dominique: I am many things. a Phone book or an "at a glance" is NOT one of them. I am not a one stop shop for information, child.

Well, things were going smashingly. Two seconds flat and she was already pissed off, and to be honest Jackson wasn't all too impressed. She had no other real business than to tell the information she knew. She had no ties to them, and she obviously had no desire to be friends of any sort. It seemed as if she got off on being withholding. He was about to speak his mind, when Richard interjected, pathetically polite and cordial.

He nibbled away on his vegetable medley as Richard went on and on, which seemed to appease the songstress and she finally let go of some information.

Dominique: But because of who you are...ALL of you...this is your reality. There are those who would see you captured and held as "posessions" and those who would see you DEAD. Whatever Delilah told you...THIS is the reality of the situation. You won't be able to change that and your would be protector is GONE, leaving you to face something you are not ready for.

Those words hit him pretty hard. It was like reality crashing down. They weren't ready. They had hardly any formal training. Everything they knew about their abilities, they learned themselves. And Delilah wasn't there anymore to keep them safe. But such was life, he guessed. Sooner or later they were going to have to fly on their own. Unfortunately that time was now. She seemed to think Shade wasn't working for MysTech, but that was definitely apparent to Jackson. They find out information on a global entity hellbent on using mutants as experiments or plot points and the next day they are attacked by some woman of shadow? She may not be a PART of them, but she was definitely helping them out. It was not merely coincidence.

That was when Olivia lost it. He was interested in her but she was pretty damn fiery at times. Rough around the edges so to speak, though Jackson was far from diplomatic himself. This "Shade" obviously had no attachment to anyone anymore. And the fact that this Hellfire Club seemed unable to keep tabs on her reaffirmed to him, that even THEY didn't know how to deal with her. She posed a threat LONG before this dinner at the Roosevelt, and he felt like Dominique knew this and did nothing. Brenda once again became mediator, rejumbling the words of others to sound how normal people would speak.

Dominique set forthe a plan of action. Regardless of his personal view on her personality, what she was doing, was helpful. It wouldn't be hard for him to get away, and he suspected it wouldn't be hard for the others, either, and plus he LOVED this hotel. They had 4 hours to tie up their affairs and leave. But there was just one thing. Regardless of how he felt about his parents, his mortality hit him like a ton of bricks. What if he was saying goodbye for the last time? He tried to push this aside as Dominique says her goodbyes to Richard and Brenda and exits the restaurant. Jackson sighed, taking a sip of his club soda.

"Well.. that was interesting. At least now we have a little bit of an idea on what's going on. But do we really think she can get rid of this Shade? I mean i'm all for giving her the option, but Shade was chosen for a reason, and I don't think it wasn't well thought out. I think she scares Dominique more than she let on..."
