Conservative author Ann Coulter sparked a storm on Wednesday after describing a group of September 11 widows who backed the Democratic Party as millionaire "witches" reveling in their status as celebrities.

"I've never seen people enjoying their husbands' deaths so much," Coulter writes in her book "Godless: The Church of Liberalism," published on Tuesday, referring to four women who headed a campaign that resulted in the creation of the September 11 Commission that investigated the hijacked plane attacks.

Coulter wrote that the women were millionaires as a result of compensation settlements and were "reveling in their status as celebrities and stalked by grief-arazzis."

A spokeswoman for publisher Crown Forum said it had set a first print run of 1 million copies of "Godless" and there were 1.5 million copies of Coulter's previous four books in print.

The four women, Kristen Breitweiser, Patty Casazza, Mindy Kleinberg and Lorie Van Auken, declined to discuss the book in detail but issued a statement saying they had been slandered.

"There was no joy in watching men that we loved burn alive. There was no happiness in telling our children that their fathers were never coming home again," said the statement signed by the four, along with a fifth woman, Monica Gabrielle.

The four women, who live in or around East Brunswick, New Jersey, became friends after September 11 and formed a group that agitated for the investigation. "Our only motivation ever was to make our nation safer," they said.

Coulter, whose books include the bestseller "How to Talk to a Liberal (If You Must)," argues in the new book the women she dubs "the Witches of East Brunswick" wanted to blame President George W. Bush for not preventing the attacks.

She criticized them for making a campaign advertisement for Democratic presidential candidate Sen. John Kerry in 2004, and added: "By the way, how do we know their husbands weren't planning to divorce these harpies? Now that their shelf life is dwindling, they'd better hurry up and appear in Playboy."

PERSONAL ATTACKS

Asked by Reuters why she made such personal comments, Coulter said by e-mail, "I am tired of victims being used as billboards for untenable liberal political beliefs."

"A lot of Americans have been seething over the inanities of these professional victims for some time," she added.

Democratic Sen. Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey said Coulter's "shameless attack" on the widows sparked disgust. "Her bookselling antics and accompanying vulgarity deserve our deepest contempt," he said in a statement.

The New York Post, owned by Rupert Murdoch's News. Corp., slammed the comments in an article on Wednesday headlined: "Righty writer Coulter hurls nasty gibes at 9/11 gals."

Coulter, a regular television commentator who is hugely popular among some conservatives, was challenged on NBC's "Today" show on Tuesday over what host Matt Lauer called "dramatic" remarks, prompting her to say, "You are getting testy with me."

Coulter is known for a combative column after September 11 saying, "We should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity." In one book, she wrote, "Even Islamic terrorists don't hate America like liberals do."

Her latest comments were quoted on radio stations in New York on Wednesday and the book was the subject of debate on Web sites such as www.salon.com. The Daily News newspaper's front-page headline was "Coulter the Cruel."

The controversy appeared to be doing no harm to sales of Coulter's latest book, which was listed as the second-best seller of the day at online retailer Amazon.com on Wednesday afternoon.

Binder, I am DISGUSTED, DISGUSTED AT ANN COULTER FOR THESE REMARKS.

I have lost so much respect for her and Sean Hannity, anyone, anyone that would justify her evil.

This time they have gone too far .. . I was considering on buying her book for the Evolution vs. Creation section, but I won't give her a dime of my money or waste a second of my life reading her book.

I have read her articles off and on for years, and she has gotten juvenile and childish with her remarks, but nothing like this. This is beyond disgusting,
being vile and beyond pure filth.

I am ashamed that a person who calls themself a " great american" like Sean Hannity, would endrose and support this evil. Then for all fans to cheer her on while she spews this venom.

I am shocked Binder, no matter what you think about me, about my views about homosexuality, other faiths, or politics, nothing, nothing is as low as this.

It's time we Moderates and Conservatives take back social dialogue. When folks like Coulter can sell books by the millions and make millions, that shows that we have sunked to levels of hate and prejudice and ignorance beyond the 1950s.

This shows that America has a long way to go in dialogue.

For all you folks out there, Ann Coulter does no represent Christanity, nor
Conservatism, all she represents is her own foolishness.

I am disgusted . .

Oh so what? big deal. she has a right to say what she wants. i could care less if she refered to them as harpies. lol its actually funny that people are so sensitive about it and they have nothing to do with it. you dont like her? dont buy her book.

that's rather unfeeling of you Lethal. OBVIOUSLY people dont have to buy her book..but she still has television, the news paper and the internet as other mediums to purvey her hatefull rhetoric.

if YOU became a widower and received some form of compensation because of it, would YOU take kindly to someone suggesting "you enjoyed your wife's death?" i think most people would be ready to beat some ass.

and she went on to sound more like a chauvanist pig (and adding to the fact that she is a DISGRACE to the female gender) when she suggested "how did they know their husbands werent going to divorce them....these women's shelf lives are decreasing so they better pose for play boy while they can."

this woman isnt "telling the truth" as some of her defenders suggest...she's being cruel and abusive and its TYPICAL of extreme right wing bigots who think that their way is the only way. this book should be PULLED from stores and SHE should be marginalized. if republicans and conservatives think that people like Ann Coulter FURTHER their cause...they should think again.

What a witch.....now there's a HUGE difference between stating your opinion when you feel strongly about it. It's called controversy. But for her to blatantly attack widows of the 9/11 attacks calling them harpies, saying that they're shelve life was running out, is uncalled for and outright rude and cruel. She isn't controversial, she's a lonely woman trying to stir up trouble at any costs.

That bitch needs to get hit by a bus full of Atheists.

I have to care about what Ann Coulter says to 4 widows? Like that has any bearing on my life. Who actually gives a fuck about her opinion anyway?

Or maybe she need to be dicked down by a bus of atheists?:D

Viscious Whore! These women lost the men they loved the most in the world. She gives both women and conservatives a bad name. I live with Conservatives (aka my family) and I know how they're like and they're nothing like her. Leave these women alone... it's hard enough to get through everyday life without Harpies like Ann.

You know I really don't know which is scary the fact that she thinks the way she does and actually has widespread access to public forums in order to voice her 'thoughts', or the fact that she actually has fans and supports. Think about it odds are that half the crap that's in her books people out there are reading and going "Oh yeah that's it girl stick it to the pinko liberals etc...." It's like a bizarre civil mob mentality vibe. She's a political sociopath with a cult following.

Unbelievable!! I heard something on the TV regarding this and I didn't catch it all but reading it now make sme agree with what someone posted earlier. She should be stoned. This is the kind of person that will say these thing and spout off about what she feels....then a year or so down the line she will lose someone precious to her and wonder why no one gives a flying fig!!! Karma...what goes around......

That's what I want to know, since she's been saying crazy things for years (Such as wanting to convert muslims at gunpoint), I would think that people would realize she's saying alot of this stuff for shock value and attention and then just stop paying so much attention to her...on the other hand, I do understand that it genuinely appals people and so they feel that they *have* to discuss it (I myself am somewhat of that mind as well ;)).

An ex-friend of mine was a huge fan of Ann Coulter....I really don't get why :s I don't understand how any loving human being could possibly be a fan of hers, since she says mean things to the poor widows of 9/11, and since she says that she wants to convert people at gunpoint (as if they'd stay converted for long, pfft!).

Margaret Cho says everything I feel about Ann Coulter in her blog:

Ann Coulter

People get so pissed off at Ann Coulter. I never really saw her before, but when her name is mentioned in my circles, muthafuckas go off. I realized I needed to do some research on her. Generally, I will read everything and agree somewhat with everyone, even extreme or stupid points of view, because anyone that can get it together to write a book is kind of cool. The worse the author is, the more I enjoy it. Schadenfreude never fails to capture me in a web of desire. I got that "You got me at 'Hello'." - feeling when reading the forward for SLANDER, written by high ass junkie pill popper Rush Limbaugh. I cannot believe that he was able to put sentences together while on all those fucking drugs, which explains his chaotic and disturbing point of view and therefore makes him an incredible idiot savant.

I dove into Ann's writing, which was a cross between bizarre accusations about liberal politicians and psycho babble hyperbolic lies that make no sense. The conservative men love her, because she is a loyal slave to the status quo. She is Cunta Kinte. As well as betraying her gender, as a notoriously anti-feminist woman hater, she is also racist, homophobic, without compassion, inhumane, arrogant, dishonest, contradictory, not funny, has an arguing technique that compares closely to "I know you are, but what am I?", wears red leather miniskirts and is just plain fucking wrong. I cannot even quote her because everything she says is too awful for me to write. All this and she isn't even hot. If you are going to be wrong, at least be hot. I am guilty of some of the biases that Ann is, but in reverse. My prejudice and hatred of the establishment, the judicial system, anti- abortionists, racism, misogyny, the integration of church and state - can spiral downwards out of control, and maybe my facts could be discounted and I could be called a liar as well. But I don't give a shit, because at least I am hot. I know I may not be traditionally pretty, but playas line up around the block to make some time with me, and they aren't even getting it right then. The line is just for the wristband, yo. The hotness is not about age, looks, body type, race - it is about honesty, knowing who you are and being who you are, without trying to front like you are better than you are. It is about the down deep authenticity of self, then living it, loving it and looking it.

If Ann were hot, then I could excuse some of her behavior. She only goes to the safe end of her sex appeal, ever so slightly, flossing a North Beach leather mini with her long legs and crazy anorexic body. If she had some integrity, she would go get some straight up phat silicone titties, and part her blonde hair in the middle, take two Velcro rollers and make those stripper forehead curls that make the boys say "Whassup Shorty!!" If she had blonder, bigger hair, that would certainly add credibility to her conservative politics and her robotic upper class bigot never-had-any-shit-come-down-on-them-like-a-hard-rain-so-why-should-they-care-about-anyone-but-themselves values. She cannot spit her ignorant angry rhymes successfully with that beige lawyer lipstick. Ann needs to get some Revlon's Cherries in the Snow, the ho's lipstick of choice. She is a ho in sheep's clothing, and it is about time she told the truth, the ho truth, and nothing but the truth. There is nothing wrong with docking cock for the things you believe in, but don't play the thinking man's bombshell with me. Because she doesn't think and she is not anywhere near being the bomb and I just wish that she could be detonated and explode. But the only way that she could blow up is to face the porn movie 70s dicksucking muzak and own up to her politico prostitution. I am a ho, for the people, and I love that, and I am proud, because I embrace my ho side, and never try to pretend like I know everything about everything because I don't. I don't have to front, because I actually care about people. I believe in equality for everyone. All I ask for is that. And it is not possible in the America we live in, for a million reasons. Ann being one of them. She won't put 'em on the glass, so she is not qualified to throw stones.
