Come on, I know there have to be some country music lovers out there!! So let's get chatting!! New or old country? Tough 'outlaw' country or poppy Faith Hill country?
Personally, I love old country, like new country, LOVE the 'outlaw' thing (which really began back in the day with Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, etc etc) like Big & Rich, Montgomery Gentry, Gretchen Wilson etc. Can't STAND pop-infused ladies like Shania Twain and Faith Hill. Blah. So what are your favorite country bands? Artists? Song? Videos? (I love "Whiskey Lullabye")

I love all kinds of music, including country. My favs are Gretchen Wilson, Shania Twain, Rascal Flatts, Toby Keith, Tim McGraw, and Martina McBride.

I'm not really into the country music that sounds "hickish", I like more of the slower country songs, and some of the upbeat ones. Some of my fav songs are "Don't", "Concrete Angel", "Live like you were dying", and such. ;)

Country isnt my favorite genre of music at all...and i like the exact form of country you despise, Anchovy lol...the "pop hybrid" country. I love Shania Twain's "come on over" album mostly because of the pop/dance remixes they played on all the hot radio stations here back in 1997 thru 1999. "That Dont impress my much" (the dance remix) was my fav of the bunch but i also liked "Man i Feel like the woman"..especially when she performed it at the "Divas Live" 1998 concert on VH1.

Leanne Rimes was favorite of mine because she had a powerful voice that defied her age, its a shame she lost some of her intrigue from the over exposure. They did a dance remix of "cant fight the moonlight" i think it was back in 2001 and that was catchy. Gretchen Wilson's "Redneck Woman" is catchy too.

Faith Hill had a couple songs i enjoyed....most notably "The way you love me" and "Breathe". Faith's video for The Way you love me was cute and sexy ..something you dont see in alot of country videos.

i guess if i had to name two pure country artists that i liked...it would be Dolly Parton (i LOVE "9 to 5" the song and the movie :D) and Winona Judd ("No one else on earth").

I am a Southerner so I'd be lying if I said that I didn't like country music at all...not to be stereotypical or anything. I'm NOT a huge fan of all of these new comers in country music who are basically pop singers with 'country accents'. I love Loretta Lynn and how she 'broke rules' about what female country singers were SUPPOSED to be singing about. She put almost everyone in shock with her song about "the pill". No one saw THAT coming.

Faith Hill is okay. I think she is a GREAT person, but I hate her songs. I used to be a huge Shania Twain fan back when I was five or six, but her latest songs sound like she is singing out of her nose. I like the Dixie Chicks, despite all the controversy. The Judds have to be one of my FAVORITE bands/singers of all time:blah: . I started collecting their CDs after listening to Why Not Me on the radio. My favorite country song is : Shania Twain~ Any Man of Mine http://www.lyricsfreak.com/s/shania-twain/123837.html

Yeah... I love both kinds... I grew up listening to the classics like George Jones, Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton.... Waylan Jennings... all of The Dirty Dozen.... Tanya Tucker, Tammy Wynett, Conway Twitty. But I still love new country.... like Brooks And Dunn, SheDaisy, The Dixie Chick, Toby Keith, ect.... I grew up listening to country.

I have to admit, some Country really gets me going for some reason. I absolutely used to LOVE Blackhawk and saw them in concert because they came to my town lol.. I love the song "Goodbye Says it All" and the one that goes "Your blue might be grey, your less might be more.."

In Country Music I have always liked the females much better than the Males.. like Alison Krauss for example and her song with Brad Paisley (Whiskey Lullaby) and "When You Say Nothing At All" and I absolutely Love Faith Hill I even bought her first album.. I think she has an amazing voice and she is just so gorgeous.. Tim McGraw is like the luckiest man alive lol.. Got to give props to Martina who I believe has one of the most amazing voices IN Music and to Shania her last CD SUCKED But Come on Over.. there is not ONE person I knew that didn't know at least one of her songs.. I mean "Still the One" was even on TRL for WEEKS lol!

and Farrah I LOVED "Noone Else on Earth!"

Plus I like some Reba McEntire too.. my favorite is her song with her back up singer "Does He Love You" and "Fancy"

Brandon...there was a remix of "No one else on earth"...it wasnt a dance remix..it was just a version with a stronger bass line and beat and it was AWESOME...Winona has such a strong voice. She did an album in 2002 (i think) where she tried borrowing a leaf from Cher's "believe" album...and it WORKED....she really handled singing against more dance styled beats and club sound melodies but the album was really slept on by the pop/club crowd.

Shania's last album was a big flop...it was like she was trying to recapture the flair and energy of the "come on over" album. honestly...her "Come on over" album was the "thriller" of her career..she will NEVER be able to out do the success of that album

"Come on Over" was one of an ELITE few albums that was actually certified DIAMOND. (Madonna's "Like a Virgin" and Michael Jackson's "Thriller" were among the other elite few). It had so many hits..most of which were remixed and enjoyed MASSIVE cross over success . Back then she was spicy, sassy..but she's gotten bland now.

I definately have a respect for country, but I admit that I don't listen to much of it now-a-days. I stopped being big into country when it started to goto all that whiney crap.... I'm a fan of the classics of country. (think Patsy Cline and Loretta Lynn era..... and even some newer than them: Alan Jackson, Garth Brooks, Willie Nelson, Faith Hill, Reba Mcentire......etc). I like the song "Friends in Low Places"... there's no better song to listen to when you're getting drunk ;) haha

Woot for country fans: BTW, Prophet, I LOVE Blackhawk!!! And I have yet to meet a female country music fan who doesn't know all the words to "Fancy". You hit on a classic there! And Beautie: Lorretta Lynn: Classic, beautiful, still kickin'. Love her. "You Ain't Woman Enough" is my theme song!!! Winona is the Big Mama of country music as far as I'm concerned, she is amazing! (That was NOT a fat joke! Sorry...)

As far as the pop country thing goes, I can respect women like Shania Twain and Faith Hill, because they can REALLY sing, but I think Come On Over was the highlight of Shania's career. It was slightly poppy, but not too much. I do like the song 'Don't' though. And Faith Hill USED to be a lot more "pop-centric" than she is now. Her new single "Mississippi Girl" rocks my socks off.

But what about male country artists? I love of course, the classics like Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Charlie Pride but I also love some newer guys like Travis Tritt, Brooks & Dunn, Trace Adkins, Toby Keith, Big & Rich, Montgomery Gentry. And what about bands? Trick Pony, SHEdaisy (oooh, I love them), the Dixie Chicks, Hot Apple Pie (Ha, I love their "Hillbillies Love it in the Hay" song) Diamond Rio, Alabama...

And, so what about the move towards what I like to call "Buffett-ism"? Kenny Chesney is doing it with his new album, Big & Rich sort of did it with "Big Time", and Toby Keith with "Stays in Mexico", but those are just one song. What do y'all think of the whole 'island' beachy thing, hugely popularized by the amazing and fantastic Jimmy Buffet? I personally think Kenny isn't doing it right. Now, I haven't heard ALL of "Old Blue Chair" but from what I have heard and seen, the songs don't actually have a 'beachy' rhythm or subject matter, it's just that he sets his videos on the beach. Now that's just silly. You can't expect to get your own legion of 'Parrotheads' without at least one song with a steel drum. ;)

I love Johnny Cash. He is one of the greatest, if not the best, male country singers of all time. He voice was so deep and haunting and I LOVE how he always wore black. Although anyone could have seen it coming, his death was one of the most traumatic days of my life.

Trick Pony is great, too. I love their new video where everything is black and white except some with some things colored red. I used to like SHEdaisy, but lately their songs just lack anything...good. They ARE very nice people, though...as is nearly everyone in the Country Music business.

MAN! SHEdaisy! I remember only one song from them.. "Little Goodbye"

I loved the chorus on that song "Took the hourglass, left the sand, now you got time on your hands" and then all of a sudden you hear "Funny little buddha man!" A great song lol.

I am a huge fan of music but like almost all the other genres country music is becoming watered down. I do not listen to it much anymore. I love and will always love the older country for it's story telling. Nowadays it is all about this girl or that guy and they broke up with me or I love them more than that or this and it just gets old after awhile. Back in the day artists like the late great Johnny Cash (one of my fave artists of all time) kept you tuned in by telling you some of the greatest stories. One in paticular and also a fave of mine is "Give My Love To Rose". It is a sad song but one that in the end you feel like you have just watched a movie or read a book. These songs are what make great music not what is on the air today. I am not saying all of todays country is like that but most of it is.

I understand what you mean by that. I really don't like how country is almost all about cheesy, dating romance when it used to be about 'real' love. There used to be so much more emotion in their voices, too.

Also, and I know alot of people are going to hate me for this but, I am soooo sick and bloody tired of Toby Kieth. I understand his whole reason behind his song "The Angry American" and I even liked that song (Till the radio played it out). Now it is like he is thinking, "Hey...I had a hit with that patriotic song. Let me try another." and that to me just diminishes what the first song meant. It's like an artist nowadys hears a #1 hit and then 1000 of them try and imitate it. That was another reason I liked Cash and also Willie. They did what they wanted to do and to hell with what the music industry thought. Nelson is still doing it. Like Marlayna Marie stated, it has all become cheesy. The country artists come out with these cutsie jingles and they write these songs that you know they were sitting there thinking "This is gonna be a #1 hit and make me alot of money." When instead they should just follow their heart and see what happens. Cash did and he died on top of the industry. I wish the country artists as well as the artists in all the other genres would quit being followers and start being real artists.

I agree about Toby Keith. I’m not against America, I love my country, but too much is TOO MUCH. He’s everywhere now. What I really don’t like is when artist turn ‘Country Music’ into hillbilly/redneck things CONSTANTLY, though I don’t mind it once or twice. You’re completely right. I don’t know why it’s all about money to everyone, or so it seems. Not that I want Johnny Cash imitated, but it’d be great if they too would dot their own thing. Not by doing what Cash did on the same level type thing, but being their selves instead of money-machines.

Ugh, I totally agree. Toby Keith USED to be sooo amazing. I mean I loved 'Shoulda Been a Cowboy" and 'You Shouldn't Kiss Me Like This'. Now he's either all "country playboy" or "Angry American". I actually like 'American Soldier' much much better than 'The Angry American'.

And what y'all were saying about country becoming so 'watered down': I agree. It's why I still love George Strait and Reba (Night the Lights Went Out in GA, Fancy, etc). They're both really good modern storytellers. I've always loved story songs: Old Red, Folsom Prison, the Ballad of Thunder Road. I DO love country with attitude, though, like Little Big Town's new song 'Boondocks' and both of Hot Apple Pie's new songs. A lot of newer country artists are managing to combine the country sound with a rock sensibility and I really love that, depending on how it's done. Trace Adkins and Travis Tritt manage to tell stories in the good old country style and three minutes later rock out with a song that will get you on your feet. It's why I love them; their versatility.

I ain't saying nothing . . .I am still mad Carrie Underwood's hillbilly self won American Idol. Country is not my thing, my teacher said it best if Rap and Country were the only forms of music left I would stop listening to music all together. Both have a lot in common in that their fans idenity with the music by the way their dress and have sub cultures made out of them and they both are the top selling foms of music and the most known artists.

So I can understand folks obession with country, I personanlly just don't like it.

I wasn’t exactly pleased with Carrie Underwood’s win, either. Then again, I didn’t watch the entire program, or anything more than the last show. Like many of use wrote before, country the old was is mostly the right way. Today people like Carrie Underwood are ruining it, in my opinion. That’s why I prefer old country or southern rock over the whining, new, ‘look at me, I’m a cowgirl/boy’ type thing.
