Here we go, opening a big old can of worms....Ready? Ok.
Historically (at least in America), the world operated in two spheres. The public and the private sphere. Women were relegated to the private sphere (taking care of children, managing the household) while men participated in the public sphere (business, politics, even something as simple as reading a newspaper). The Feminist movement (of both the early and late twentieth century) changed that irreversably and (I would argue) for the better. But it has also raised whole new questions.
Does equality between men and women mean that women can do anything men can? SHould they? Obviously men simply can't do everything a woman can (at least, not until science makes some advances...but even if they do, SHOULD men have babies, nurse them, etc?) Should women have to act like men to get ahead in the workplace (working forty or fifty hour weeks while they still have to go home and cook dinner or drive kids to school) ? SHould companies be required to offer day care or extended maternity leave not only for the women in their employ, but for the men who want to stay how with their wives and new babies? And where does religion come into the gender role question?
While I was gone, I had a personal discovery and in my opinion, women and men are equal partners in the world and in life with inherent differences between them. These differences (in temperament or biologically) should never be a hinderance to either sex, but rather accomadated and celebrated. A women and a man are two parts of a whole, different but equal and society should treat them that way.
Who wants to weigh in and face the wrath of 'Binder?
