Batwoman comes out of the cave (2:17)

NEW YORK (AP) -- Years after she first emerged from the Batcave, Batwoman is coming out of the closet.

DC Comics is resurrecting the classic comic book character as a lesbian, unveiling the new Batwoman in July as part of an ongoing weekly series that began this year. The 5-foot-10 superhero comes with flowing red hair, knee-high red boots with spiked heels, and a form-fitting black outfit.

"We decided to give her a different point of view," explained Dan DiDio, vice president and executive editor at DC. "We wanted to make her a more unique personality than others in the Bat-family. That's one of the reasons we went in this direction." (Watch people on the streets react -- 2:17)

(DC Comics, like CNN, is a division of Time Warner.)
The original Batwoman was started in 1956, and killed off in 1979. The new character will share the same name as her original alter ego, Kathy Kane. And the new Batwoman arrives with ties to others in the Gotham City world.

"She's a socialite from Gotham high society," DiDio said. "She has some past connection with Bruce Wayne. And she's also had a past love affair with one of our lead characters, Renee Montoya."

Montoya, in the "52" comic book series, is a former police detective. Wayne, of course, is Batman's true identity -- but he has disappeared, along with Superman and Wonder Woman, leaving Gotham a more dangerous place.

The "52" series is a collaboration of four acclaimed writers, with one episode per week for one year. The comics will introduce other diverse characters as the story plays out.

"This is not just about having a gay character," DiDio said. "We're trying for overall diversity in the DC universe. We have strong African-American, Hispanic and Asian characters. We're trying to get a better cross-section of our readership and the world."

The outing of Batwoman created a furor of opinions on Web sites devoted to DC Comics. Opinions ranged from outrage to approval. Others took a more tongue-in-cheek approach to the announcement.
"Wouldn't ugly people as heroes be more groundbreaking?" asked one poster. "You know, 200-pound woman, man with horseshoe hair loss pattern, people with cold sores, etc.?"

DiDio asked that people wait until the new Batwoman's appearance in the series before they pass judgment.

"You know what? Judge us by the story and character we create," he said. "We are confident that we are telling a great story with a strong, complex character."

DiDio spent most of the morning fielding phone calls from media intrigued by the Batwoman reinvention.

"It's kind of weird," he said. "We had a feeling it would attract some attention, but we're a little surprised it did this much."

A crime fighting lesbian? there is a god.

so when will the Batwoman avatar make its appearance on screen-gems?

The only thing I have to complain about here is a purely cosmetic issue; I don't like the use of striking red on a Bat-costume. After all, they are supposed to be shadowy costumes for all the adults of the "Bat-Family;" as much as anything else, this showed the darker attitudes and more grey-area oriented moral outlook of those old enough to understand such things, whilst the younger members have always worn bright colours, symbolising the youth and innocence of it all, as much as being a simple colour contrast.

Still, the character sounds fun, and I'll be keeping an eye out in that direction.

That's hot...I'm loving her costume but I do agree with Hawk. But I think perhaps the writers want something drastic, thus the change in color. I LOVE the spiked heels, most female characters had once lost that appeal. I remember Storm and a bunch of other characters had spiked heels, which added to their appeal.

I'm anxious for this after reading the short summary. I like the idea of a gay character, something different. :D Woo!

Honestly I never understood why heroic women wear heels, other than male creators thinking like horny 13 year olds. Few women can even walk in heels these days much less engage in complex combat manuevers, all I keep thinking is sooner or later she's going to snap her ankles. I guess spiked heels don't do anything for me, they're just not practical.

Hopefully they'll make her interesting and not just have her make out with other women to sell to horny teenage boys and girls.

are you sure about that? i've been tromping around in 4, 5 and on a few occasions SIX inch heels. the six inch stilletos were reserved for evening wear ...mostly club scenarios.

I watched my mother, grandmother and aunts wearing high heels as a ittle girl and i couldnt wait to get into them.

and as for women in comics..i think the first two women i saw wearing high heeled boots with their costumes were Ms. Marvel II and Crystal the Elemental. i thought it was the coolest thing.

Marc Silvestri gave Rogue, Storm, Psylocke and Dazzler high heels as well and believe me Storm and Rogue ROCKED those heels. Dazzler's civilian outfits w/high heels were pretty fabulous as well. in the prologue to Inferno, when Rogue was wearing one of DAZZLER'S ensembles (a golden bikini style skating suit with golden roller skates) and Dazzler confronted her, Dazzler herself was wearing a tight, off the shoulder read dress with a black low slung belt and Marc Silvestri drew her wearing black leather high heels that had to be at least 4 inches and her legs were so tight and w/ stocking that had the classic seams up the back. It was so cool

Storm made fighting in high heels look SO EASY just like Dazzler had made traveling at high speeds and fighting in roller skates look so easy.
Storm did gymnastics, hand to hand combat, running, and everything else in her high heeled boots and never missed a step.

Yeah I remember all of those, of course horny teenager in me at the time loved Rogue and whatever she wore:D . But in the real world would any woman in their right mind attempt gymnastics and ass kick in a pair of stilletos. Some women can wear some high heels unfortunately I see most of them that try wobble a fairly often. Don't get me wrong depending on the situation it's as sexy as woman wearing only an Oxford shirt;) . But a street level vigilante leaping from rooftop to rooftop, the practical part of me says why?!?

only if you get em at PAYLESS :haha:

ive never had that happen to me. now obviously i dont go to work in 5 or 6 inch heels. thats ridiculous and to wear heels that high in daylight makes you look ...tacky.

but 3 or 4 inch heels i DO wear and ive NEVER had one break on me. but at the same time if i have to run down a flight of stairs(like during a fire drill) i will take my heels off.

Ahh not true, a friend of mine recently had her GINA Salsas break while on the dancefloor. There were tears that night, let me tell you.

Simple, they have shock absorbtion built into the heel allowing for for greater effieciency while running and make the landings softer from rooftop to rooftop. The funny thing is, I'm not joking, the US army was actually investigating making combat boots with 1-3 inch springs in the heels, not only that, assuming a wide enough point, its more effiecient and faster to run in heels(Nike was planning on making heeled sprinter shoes for the Athens games but I don't remember what happened with that).

So there you go, heels do serve a useful purpose, plus if she's a rich socialite already she'd be used to wearing heels constantly.

It should be interesting to see a different take on a character's sexuality in comics. Though it's not like it's a new thing - the aforementioned Renee Montoya and Karma spring to mind as superheroines with a penchant for the fairer of the two sexes. ;) :D

Personally, this aspect of the new batwoman would neither make me more or less-inclined to read the comic. I tend to read comics of characters I feel a lot in common with. I probably won't check this one out unless I hear some positive buzz about it.

I'm with Spell here. Some women don't wear heels well because they don't wear them often enought. But my wife, for instance, wore them constantly when we were dating and I'll bet anything she could run and fight in those hell. There was NEVER even a wobble. I have dated other young ladies for whom this would also not be an issue. I asked one after I playfully chased her--and did not catch her immdeiately due to her skill in running in heels--how she did it. She told me the key was when she really needed to move she flexed her foot a bit further and ran on the front only.
Also, I'd bet anything that heels in a costume are probably reinforced so as to take the strain, just as those skin tight clothes feature molecules that don't allow Power Girl, for example, to give a free boob show everytime she moves her muscles too quickly.
