South Carolina governor calls for Confederate flag's removal

-----------------------

I must say, I'm surprised (in a good way) by Haley's behavior & response to this horrific tragedy in Charleston. She has spoken w/ a level of sympathy, empathy & understanding I previously didn't think she had. & I'm SO glad that she's doing the right thing, & calling for the removal of the confederate flag from the SC capital grounds.

That flag is right up there w/ the swastika. It's a symbol of HATE & it points to an era in this country that we should be trying to move past & show that we've evolved in our thinking.

That was my first reaction too, but after thinking about it, I now think that while while there's alot more that she (& the rest of our law makers, particularly CONGRESS) she could do, this one issue IS very significant.

This flag is a symbol of a very bad time in this country. Anybody who was of african descent was considered PROPERTY when this flag became a thing & most of the ppl who waved this flag w/ PRIDE wanted to PRESERVE their way of life, which included the owning of slaves & the practice of chattle slavery. This flag represents a very dark period & elements of that period still haunt us today. The murderer of those 9 ppl in that historic black church counted that flag among his symbols of inspiration, as do MANY racists...& we need to remember that racism is DEFINITELY alive & well in this country....this country is SICK w/ racism & symbols like this are a reminder of that.

Germany banned the swastika b/c they were honest w/ themselves about what that symbol represented in their country. The ppl who try to downplay it's significance as a symbol of hate (some even going so far as to reference its origins as an egyptian cross...as if the jews or anyone else who died under that symbol would be comforted by THAT) are engaging in an act of moral cowardice, just like the defenders of the confederate flag.

If this country is going to ever be true to its claims of "moving forward" & being a place for ALL of it's people, then this flag does NOT belong in our so-called modern, civilized, "post-racial" society. It just doesn't.

Ppl try to spin it saying it's about heritage not hate or "southern pride"...& all i can say to that is, it takes conscious thought to engage in MORAL COWARDICE.

If a private citizen wants to fly that flag on his or her front lawn...well I don't suppose he could be stopped from doing that....but to have it on public property, especially the grounds of a state capital? NOPE. not acceptable & while taking the flag down will not bring back those victims or erase the problem over night, it will send a big message to the racists that their way of thinking is NOT the standard & that flag has no place in REAL american society that is supposed to represent ALL ppl/colors/spiritual backgrounds/genders etc.
