Sylvester Stallone Returns in Rocky Balboa
Source: MGM
October 12, 2005

Sylvester Stallone will reprise his role as legendary boxing champion Rocky Balboa in the new film Rocky Balboa, it was announced today by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc., Revolution Studios and Columbia Pictures, who will co-produce and co-finance the film. Columbia Pictures will also handle distribution for the film.

Stallone, who received Academy Award nominations for starring in and writing Rocky, will serve as writer and director of the film. A Chartoff/Winkler production, the film is scheduled to begin shooting early in 2006.

Rocky Balboa is the next story in the saga of Philadelphia boxer Rocky Balboa, one of Hollywood's most beloved characters. In the film, Rocky has long since retired but is drawn back to the boxing ring one last time. On the way he is challenged by a powerful new champion, by personal tragedy and ultimately by himself.

According to Stallone, "'Rocky Balboa' is about everybody who feels they want to participate in the race of life, rather than be a bystander. You're never too old to climb a mountain, if that's your desire."

Dan Taylor, President of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, stated, "We're convinced the Rocky franchise is as strong as ever, with a whole new generation of filmgoers ready to be introduced and an established fan base eager to be reacquainted with this iconic character. We felt it was the perfect first film to be green lit under the 'new' MGM."

"In many ways, the screenplay really took me back to the original 'Rocky,'" said Revolution Studios founder Joe Roth. "As a past champion, Rocky Balboa is once again a regular guy who has to find himself and deal with real life. This film brings Rocky's story full-circle."

The film will be produced by Charles Winkler, William Chartoff and David Winkler. Robert Chartoff and Irwin Winkler, the producers of the previous "Rocky" films, will serve as executive producers.

You're never too old to climb a mountain, if that's your desire."

Yes, yes you can and this film will prove it!

What really happened was Stallone got jealous when Eastwood redefined the boxing film genre with an alternative to the rags to riches storyline that has ever been the standard to that genre.

Rocky was a great feel good movie which grew ever more unrealistic as the sequels kept coming. As a boxing fan I just can't by into this Rocky (the actual character) was OLD in the first movie which, admittingly added to the whole 'your never too old' storyline. But this to me is just pointless.

Stallone would be better writing the story from Rocky's perspective as a trainer and play a supporting role to another main character. The Film could take a more realistic approach as: 'Rocky could be training the main character, but instead of success the character could fail terribly and end up killing himself. Tragic, upsetting and completing the Rocky Franchise in true style. Thereby bringing true respect to the titles and Stallones acting ability.

zorcrow, sometimes you amaze me with your lack of respect.

first of all without Lynda Carter there would be NO "Wonder Woman" in american pop culture..for several generations now...she IS Wonder Woman...and she's aged very well.

secondly...i think DDD is on point with his assesment of the situation. Sylvester Stallone has been on the decline as an actor since "Demolition Man" in 1996. Sandra Bullock's star was rising at the time and Wesley Snipes easily eclipsed Sylvester as the better looking, more engaging actor in that movie. Nothing that Sly has done SINCE has been worth watching (including that horrendous Boxing reality show that was on TV recently).

Sly just bought into the disturbing hollywood trend of "remaking" or trying to revive something that should be left to nostalgia.

How many Rocky films are there now? LOL! I think six or even now. I think what would be a cool storyline would be to have Rocky's son get into boxing and show Rocky training him, based on what DDD said. I'd see that, his son following in his dad's shoes. But I doubt that'll happen. :sure:

Some things are better remembered and not relived

Although I agree with that statement in regards to his films... the contender was entertaining in a real life look at the 'Rocky/American Dream story.'

Boxing has been on a serious decline since Lennox spanked Tyson (Well in England anyway) and the middle wieght division died a good 20 years ago. The contender at least reminded us that boxing actually exist...

What happened to the days when Tyson was a Man eating Black Man and middlewieght boxing was the true example brutality, strength and stamina... sigh I miss the good fight's....

the thing about the original Rocky film...is that it WAS Sly's "american dream" come true...he held out to play the lead role and it paid off big time. he was done to less than 100 dollars in his checking account at the time...so both he and his character were the underdog. BUT true to form...when the movie hit big and he began to get a taste of the "good life" he got rid of his loyal wife Sasha and started dating a super model. THAT was when i lost respect for him as a man. as SOON as he tasted success..he tossed away the woman that had been with him back when he was a NOBODY.

i personally think the man is FULL of himself. he's not a REAL boxer...

He'll never top the first Rocky. It's just one of those things you leave well enough alone. Though I did enjoy Rambo I and II..and I think his most over-looked movie is COPLAND...geezus that was a good movie...he did a helluva job.

Millennium Films in conjunction with Emmett/Furla Films and Equity Pictures are partnering on a $50 million Rambo IV, says The Hollywood Reporter. Sylvester Stallone is attached to star.

The story centers on former Vietnam vet John Rambo, who is living a reclusive life back home in the U.S. But when a girl goes missing, he is forced to abandon his quiet lifestyle and take justice into his own hands.

No director is attached, and the screenplay is in the early stages. The film is set to begin shooting in the spring in Mexico and the U.S.

Millennium, which describes Rambo IV as a return to the franchise's original roots, recently announced plans to produce Poe, a film about Edgar Allen Poe, with Stallone helming before seguing to Rambo IV.

Stallone will revisit another 1980s franchise when he begins filming Rocky Balboa in December.
