The "N" Word . .

When I was a little girl I use to hang out with a group of African AMerican little girls. They were so sweet and fun to hang out with. One day one of them told me it was okay for me to say the "N" word because they had excepted me as if I was black. However I didn't feel comfortable with it. My mom had always told me that the word was bad and that she would make me eat soap if she caught me saying it. To this day I still don't feel comfortable saying it nor hearing it said.

Now that I know about it's history, it even more wrong. I really don't care who you are... whether your black, white, or green, it's a word that disrepects. It's a throw back to the time when racism was at it's height and it's just pure disrespect to those who fought to end it. To those who experienced the beatings, lynchings, and discrimination. There is no good way to use the word... just like "nazi" or "wetback" or "cracker" or "chink". Nothing good can come out of this kind of language.

That word will be around as long as there is racism. And I don't mean just white people using that term, either.

I've known black people who find it perfectly acceptable to call a white person cracka or other derogatory terms, yet if a white person were to use a derogatory term on a black person they would be met with a near-violent hate.

'Nigger' is a word that has no place in society. It's (mis)use should have vanished long ago, but by changing it to Nigga a portion of African American society is doing is perpetuating it's use, whether in the standard form or another.

I also agree that other terms that should be considered offensive are becoming accepted on a widespread level. Calling women bitches as a force of habit is, for lack of a better phrase, fucked up and assbackwards.

When someone uses a term like that, a term which can be applied to them derogatorily, it saddens me because it seems like they have little self-respect.

I fully agree with you here Mat. Very well said. :D ;)

I'm curious, does racial slurs towards whites hurt just as bad as racial slurs towards whites? Like......cracker, hunky, basically those are the only two that I know of. Are there any more? Black slurs are blacky, spade, spire chunker, kefer, monkey, nappy head, mammy, bobo, eggplant(in some cases)
and last but not least nigger. To me hunky is a compliment.

Well I can't say whether or not it hurts as much as racial slurs towards other races. I'm Irish and I have no problem being called a mick, because 9 times out of 10 it's done in a relaxed way and in good humor.

"Mat, you dumb mick, put down that Guinness and get out on the dance floor!"

certainly sounds different than

"Hey whitebread, what the fuck do you think you're doing?"

Racial slurs don't really hurt me, though. They only piss me off. It really steams me when people think an entire race or nationality has never contributed anything to the betterment of the world and, hence, they have no problem degrading it with terms like those mentioned above.
